Kimi Antonelli Wins Miami GP: Third Consecutive Victory as Norris and Piastri Follow

A new era of Formula 1 dominance has arrived in Florida. Kimi Antonelli has claimed victory at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, securing his third consecutive win and cementing his position as a legitimate championship contender at just 19 years vintage.

The Italian Mercedes driver resisted a relentless late-race charge from reigning world champion Lando Norris to take the checkered flag at the Miami International Autodrome on Sunday, May 3. The win marks a historic milestone for Antonelli, who became the first driver in the sport’s history to convert his first three career pole positions into race victories.

The day was defined by volatility, beginning long before the lights went out. With heavy thunderstorms and lightning strikes reported directly over the Hard Rock Stadium, race organizers took the unusual step of moving the start time forward by three hours to find a dry window. While the morning was battered by rain, the track remained dry for the 57-lap contest, though the constant threat of a downpour kept the field on edge.

The opening laps descended into immediate chaos. Starting from pole, Antonelli suffered a poor getaway on the damp surface, allowing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to surge into the lead. Behind them, a three-way scrap for position turned sour when Max Verstappen made contact with Leclerc, sending the Red Bull driver into a 360-degree spin. The mistake plummeted Verstappen to the back of the top 10, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri of McLaren capitalized on the turmoil to move into the top four.

Antonelli recovered quickly, reclaiming the lead from Leclerc on the fifth lap. However, the lead changed hands several times in the early stages, with Norris briefly seizing control on Lap 14. The race was further disrupted by two separate midfield incidents that triggered a Safety Car: a collision between Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson, and a solo crash by Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, who had started from the pit lane after his car’s floor was found to be 2mm too wide during scrutineering.

As the race settled into a dry-weather rhythm, the battle distilled into a high-stakes duel between Antonelli, and Norris. Despite McLaren bringing significant upgrades to Miami that narrowed the performance gap, Antonelli held his nerve. He utilized a successful undercut during the sole round of pit stops to maintain his advantage, eventually crossing the line 3.264s ahead of Norris.

“It is just the beginning, the road is still long, but we’re working super hard. The team is doing an incredible job and without them I wouldn’t be here. I’m going to enjoy this one and then get back to perform.” Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes Driver

The podium was a McLaren stronghold behind the winner, with Norris taking second and Oscar Piastri securing third. Piastri’s podium came at the expense of Charles Leclerc, who suffered a dramatic collapse in the final two laps. A late spin cost the Ferrari driver multiple positions, allowing George Russell to move into fourth and Max Verstappen to claw back to fifth.

The drama did not end at the finish line. Verstappen now faces a post-race FIA investigation for allegedly crossing the white line at the pit-exit. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished seventh in a severely damaged Ferrari after sustaining floor and sidepod damage following contact with Franco Colapinto early in the race.

“Kimi, that was very, very impressive. You know I like to complain, but there was nothing to complain about today. Very good.” Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal

The result significantly shifts the landscape of the 2026 World Drivers’ Championship. Antonelli now holds a 20-point lead over his teammate, George Russell. Mercedes continues its scorching start to the season, having won all four Grands Prix held so far this year, shared between Antonelli and Russell.

For a global audience following the sport, the narrative has shifted from whether Antonelli can handle the pressure of a Mercedes seat to whether anyone can stop him. While McLaren has proven they have the pace to challenge the Silver Arrows, the Italian’s composure under pressure in Miami suggests a maturity that belies his age.
