Logistical Hurdles and Training Disruptions

Attempting the “Double”—racing in the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day—is a feat attempted by only six drivers in history. For Katherine Legge, the challenge has been compounded by a series of logistical setbacks that occurred in the lead-up to the event. As reported by The New York Times, Legge faced significant travel disruptions, including a multi-day delay following a runway incident at LaGuardia Airport, which hindered her ability to utilize necessary NASCAR simulator time.
Legge’s preparation for the Charlotte event remains minimal. She noted that she has not had the opportunity to study film or spend adequate time with her engineering team to prepare for the demands of the Cup car. With rain forecasts threatening practice sessions, her lack of experience on mile-and-a-half tracks remains a primary concern.
“I desperately need practice in the Cup car. It’s going to be my second mile-and-a-half (track), and my (ninth) Cup start. I do not want to turn into Turn 1 after the green, without having driven Charlotte, in a car I don’t know that well.” Katherine Legge, racing driver
Despite these obstacles, Legge has maintained a disciplined perspective. She is set to pilot the HMD Motorsports car at the Indy 500, starting from the 26th position, before transitioning to the Live Fast Motorsports No. 78 car for the Coca-Cola 600.
Statewide Trucking and the Impact of Female Sponsorship

Beyond the technical challenges on the track, Legge’s participation has garnered support from unconventional partners, including the Fort Wayne-based Statewide Trucking. Owned by Chrissy Schoenefeld, the company was originally founded by her grandmother in 1978. According to WPTA, the partnership materialized after a chance meeting at qualifications, where Schoenefeld approached Legge to secure an autograph for her daughters.
The connection between the driver and the business owner highlights a broader focus on female representation in male-dominated industries. Schoenefeld noted that she operates in a similarly male-centric field and finds inspiration in Legge’s career trajectory.
“As a mom of two girls, a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old that are making decisions on what their future will look like, it’s so cool to have someone like Katherine. If you watch her interviews and hear her talk, you know, she’s out there talking about how just because it hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it can’t be done.” Chrissy Schoenefeld, owner of Statewide Trucking
Schoenefeld, who will attend her first Indianapolis 500 this weekend, underscored the speed at which the sponsorship deal came together. Her company logo will be featured on Legge’s helmet, serving as a visual representation of the support for the only female driver in the field.
Managing Expectations for the 1,100-Mile Goal
While Legge’s ambition is clear, the competitive reality of the weekend is steep. Neither the HMD Motorsports entry nor the Live Fast Motorsports car is currently projected to contend for a victory or a top-15 finish. The focus for Legge is completing the full 1,100-mile distance, an objective that requires both physical endurance and mechanical reliability.
Legge’s resolve, however, remains unshaken by the lack of ideal preparation. She has actively worked to manage her own internal reactions to the chaos, consciously reminding herself to avoid frustration.
“We committed to doing this thing, and we’re not going to not do it because I don’t feel ready. It’s too late for that.” Katherine Legge, racing driver
The Final Countdown to Race Day

As the race weekend commences, the focus shifts to the track. The Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, followed by the Coca-Cola 600 at 6 p.m. For Legge, becoming the first woman to attempt the Double represents a milestone, regardless of the final outcome of the race. Her ability to navigate the transition between two distinct racing disciplines—IndyCar and NASCAR—will be tested under the scrutiny of one of the most demanding schedules in professional motorsports.
