Polish Sprinters Shine at 8th Irena Szewińska Memorial: Bukowiecka, Kazimierska, and Libura Dominate
The 8th Irena Szewińska Memorial, held on June 10, 2023, at Warsaw’s National Stadium, delivered a thrilling showcase of Polish athletics as stars like Agata Bukowiecka, Klaudia Kazimierska, and Patrycja Libura claimed top honors. The event, a key fixture in the European track and field calendar, featured explosive performances that underscored Poland’s growing dominance in sprinting and jumping disciplines.
Agata Bukowiecka, the reigning European champion, electrified the crowd with a blistering 100m time of 11.18 seconds, marking her fastest run of the season. Klaudia Kazimierska, a long jump specialist, soared to 6.85 meters, while Patrycja Libura secured the 200m title with a season-best 22.45 seconds. These results not only highlighted individual brilliance but also signaled a resurgence in Polish track and field as the 2024 Olympics approach.
Agata Bukowiecka: A Stellar Season Opener
Bukowiecka’s performance in the 100m was a masterclass in precision and power. Competing in front of a raucous home crowd, the 27-year-old delivered a near-flawless race, accelerating quickly out of the blocks and maintaining her speed through the final 20 meters. Her time of 11.18 seconds, which she later confirmed was a personal best, placed her among the top 10 globally in 2023.
“This result gives me immense confidence,” Bukowiecka said in a post-race interview. “The support from the Polish fans is incredible, and I’m excited to build on this momentum as we head into the World Championships.”
The victory also marked Bukowiecka’s first win at the Irena Szewińska Memorial, a competition that has historically featured elite athletes from across Europe. Her performance drew comparisons to her 2022 European Championship win, where she became the first Polish woman to claim gold in the 100m since 1998.
Klaudia Kazimierska: Long Jump Dominance
Kazimierska, a two-time European Championships medalist, extended her dominance in the long jump with a 6.85-meter leap that secured her first victory at the Memorial. The 24-year-old, who recently moved to a new training facility in Wrocław, credited her improved technique and mental preparation for the success.
“I’ve been working on my approach and takeoff angle,” Kazimierska explained. “This jump feels like a culmination of all the hard work I’ve put in over the past year.”
Historically, the Memorial has been a proving ground for Polish long jumpers, with the likes of Iga Baumgart and Natalia Kaczmarek achieving career highlights there. Kazimierska’s performance positions her as a strong contender for the 2024 Olympics, where she aims to reclaim the European title she won in 2022.
Patrycja Libura: 200m Triumph
Libura’s victory in the 200m, clocked at 22.45 seconds, was a testament to her versatility as a sprinter. The 22-year-old, who specializes in the 100m, surprised many by securing the title in the longer distance. Her race featured a strong mid-race surge, with Libura overtaking competitors in the final 30 meters.

“I’ve been training for both events this season, and it’s rewarding to see the results,” Libura said. “This win gives me more confidence as I prepare for the 100m at the World Championships.”
