Yulin emerged as the dominant force at the 2026 Shaanxi Provincial Youth Judo Championship, securing the top position on the gold medal table in a tightly contested battle against Xi’an. Held from April 11 to 12 at the Provincial Sports Training Center, the tournament served as a critical litmus test for the region’s rising talent ahead of the 18th Shaanxi Provincial Games.

The two-day event saw a total of 32 gold medals awarded across a rigorous schedule. Yulin claimed the championship title with 11 gold medals, narrowly beating out Xi’an, which followed closely with 10 golds. While these two cities led the charge, representative teams from Baoji, Weinan, Yan’an, Hanzhong, Shangluo and Xianyang similarly secured medals, highlighting the depth of youth judo across Shaanxi province.

One of the most anticipated matchups of the opening day occurred in the women’s -52kg category, where Yulin’s Shang Yanan demonstrated the technical precision that would eventually lead her to the top of the podium.

Shang’s path to the gold was far from simple. In the semi-finals, she faced Xi’an’s Zhang Wenfang in a grueling encounter that pushed both athletes into the “golden score” overtime period. Shang eventually broke the deadlock with a successful seoi-nage (back throw), immediately transitioning into kesa-gatame (scarf hold) to lock in the victory and advance to the final.

In the championship bout, Shang faced Ding Luhui of Hanzhong. Maintaining control of the pace throughout the match, Shang utilized koshi-waza (hip techniques) to pressure her opponent before employing ashi-waza (leg techniques) to disrupt Ding’s balance. This sequence allowed Shang to seamlessly transition into yoko-shiho-gatame (side four-quarter hold), securing the gold medal. Following her victory, Shang attributed her success to intensive, targeted training designed specifically to counter her opponents’ styles.

The men’s competition provided equally compelling action, particularly in the Men’s Group B -55kg division. Wang Xinnan emerged as a primary protagonist in this weight class, showcasing a blend of power, and stability.

Wang’s tournament began with a clinical performance against Sun Minghao of Baoji. He utilized uchi-mata (inner thigh throw) to score two waza-ari, comfortably securing his first win. He maintained this momentum in his second match, defeating Zheng Yikun of Xianyang using a high back technique to punch his ticket to the final.

The 2026 championship was a massive undertaking, featuring 188 athletes from eight representative teams across the province. To ensure comprehensive competition, the event was structured into three groups—A, B, and C—for both men and women. The competition consisted of 20 events for men and 18 for women, providing a wide array of opportunities for youth athletes to test their skills under pressure.
