Víctor Fernández-Miranda: El Fútbol Asturiano de Luto por el Expresidente del Langreo

Asturian Football Mourns Víctor Fernández-Miranda, Longest-Serving Langreo President

Langreo, Spain – The football community in Asturias is in mourning following the death of Víctor Fernández-Miranda, the longest-serving president in the history of Unión Popular de Langreo. Fernández-Miranda passed away on Monday at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness, bringing an end to a twelve-year tenure marked by stability and dedication to the club. A funeral service was held on Wednesday at the parish church of Sama de Langreo, followed by cremation at the La Florida crematorium in San Martín del Rey Aurelio.

Fernández-Miranda’s leadership began in September 2014, stepping in after the resignation of Ana Belén Pacho Alonso due to health reasons. He successfully navigated the club through a period of financial challenges and maintained its competitive position, first in Segunda División B and later in Segunda Federación. He resigned in February 2026 due to his declining health, stepping down alongside his entire board.

A Pillar of the Langreo Community

The impact of Fernández-Miranda extended far beyond the boardroom. He was widely respected throughout Asturian football for his commitment to the sport and his collaborative spirit with other clubs. Joaquín Alonso, the head of institutional relations for Sporting de Gijón, described him as “a friend to all the clubs around him and always had a spectacular willingness to help with everything.” Alonso was among the first to offer condolences on behalf of Sporting.

The sentiment was echoed by Diego Baeza, president of Real Oviedo, who expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “Today Asturian football loses a reference point. We will miss you very much, Víctor.” Representatives from Avilés also extended their condolences, highlighting the widespread respect Fernández-Miranda commanded.

A Legacy of Stability and Growth

Fernández-Miranda’s tenure was characterized by a commitment to stabilizing the club and fostering a sense of community. He successfully defended his presidency in multiple elections, including a contested vote in 2017 against Alberto Morán, where he secured 274 votes to Morán’s 69. He ran unopposed in 2021 and again in March 2025, demonstrating the confidence the club’s members had in his leadership.

Under his guidance, Langreo achieved notable successes, including a recent ascent to Segunda Federación. He oversaw the club’s ability to remain competitive in Segunda B for nearly a decade, frequently challenging for playoff spots and participating in the Copa del Rey. A particularly memorable achievement during his presidency was the 2017 promotion to Segunda B, spearheaded by then-manager Hernán Pérez.

Pérez, who coached Langreo from 2015 to 2019, fondly remembered Fernández-Miranda, saying, “He was more than just the president of a club. He opened the door for me and my family to a place that became our home.” Michu, the brother of former player Miguel Pérez Cuesta and now a sporting director for Burgos, also credited Fernández-Miranda with providing opportunities for his career, stating he was grateful for the chance to play and gain his first experience as a sporting director.

A Personal Touch Remembered

Pablo Acebal, a former player and coach for Langreo, shared a particularly close relationship with Fernández-Miranda. “I had a relationship with Víctor that went beyond the professional,” Acebal said. “I was fortunate enough to work with him in two different stages and can only say good things about him. He always did what was best for Langreo, for many years.”

Nacho López, a long-standing member of the Langreo squad, also paid tribute to the president, describing him as a “magnificent person” who was “always attentive to all of us and involved in the day-to-day running of the club, even during his recent health struggles.” López emphasized Fernández-Miranda’s unwavering support for the team and his dedication to the club’s success.

The passing of Víctor Fernández-Miranda marks the end of an era for Unión Popular de Langreo and leaves a void in the Asturian football landscape. His dedication, leadership, and genuine care for the club and its community will be deeply missed.

Langreo will continue its Segunda Federación campaign, with their next match scheduled for [insert date and opponent if available – not in sources]. The club has yet to announce plans for a successor to Fernández-Miranda, but the legacy he leaves behind will undoubtedly shape the future of the club for years to come.
