CISV Hurricane Saronno Grinds Out Victory in BXC Season Opener
The “diamond” on via Ungaretti returned to life Sunday, April 12, as CISV Hurricane Saronno secured a hard-fought victory in their opening match of the Campionato Italiano di Baseball per ciechi (BXC). Facing the Blind Fighters of Sesto Fiorentino, the home side weathered a grueling contest to start their campaign on a winning note.
The match, which began at 10:30 AM local time, served as more than just a season opener; it marked a symbolic rebirth for the organization. After previously operating out of Malnate, the team has established a fresh operational base in Saronno, adopting the local identity of the “city of amaretti” while maintaining their competitive edge as a powerhouse in inclusive sports.
A New Home for Inclusive Baseball
The victory was sweetened by the debut of a renovated and officially homologated field on via Ungaretti. The facility was specifically updated to meet the rigorous requirements of visually impaired athletes, ensuring a safe and professional environment for the BXC league.
This infrastructure project was the result of a coordinated effort between the association and the municipal administration led by Mayor Ilaria Maria Pagani. Key support came from sports councilor Mauro Lattuada and Massimo Rotondo, president of Saronno Baseball Softball. The quality of the upgraded facility has already drawn praise from the highest levels of the sport, with FIBS (Italian Baseball and Softball Federation) president Marco Mazzieri noting the high standard of the structure during its recent inauguration.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, baseball for the blind requires specific field modifications and equipment to ensure athletes can compete safely and effectively, making the homologation of the via Ungaretti field a critical milestone for the sport’s growth in the Varese province.
Experience Meets New Energy
Under the guidance of manager Moreno Grassi, the Hurricane enter this season with a roster that blends seasoned veterans with emerging talent. A central figure in this new era is team captain Massimiliano Neto, who serves as the primary point of reference for a squad described by club leadership as “regenerating.”
The team carries a heavy legacy into the 2026 season. Formerly known as Patrini Malnate CISV before rebranding as CISV Hurricane Varese in 2024, the organization is no stranger to the podium. They have previously captured the Italian championship title four times, with victories in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024.
The Road Ahead
While the opening win provides immediate momentum, the BXC schedule presents a demanding road for the Saronno-based squad. The team will need to maintain their consistency as they move from their renovated home turf to various venues across Italy.
The Hurricane face a quick turnaround for their next challenge, heading to Bologna for a clash with Fortitudo Bologna White Sox. Following that, they return to Saronno to host Leonessa Brescia.
Upcoming Schedule for CISV Hurricane Saronno:
- April 18, 3:00 PM: vs. Fortitudo BO (Campo Pietro Leoni, Bologna)
- April 26, 11:00 AM: vs. Leonessa Brescia (Via Giuseppe Ungaretti, Saronno)
- May 10, 10:30 AM: vs. Lampi (Campo Kennedy, Milan)
The team’s ability to translate this opening-day grit into a sustained run will be key as they chase another national title.
