After a 24-year absence, the Turkish national football team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup. A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kosovo in a European qualifying play-off final on March 31, 2026, secured their place in the expanded 48-team tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The decisive goal came in the 53rd minute from Kerem Aktürkoğlu, sparking celebrations amongst Turkish fans and players alike. The win marks a significant moment for Turkish football, ending a long period of frustration and near misses.

Head coach Vincenzo Montella made three changes to the starting lineup from the recent match against Romania. Zeki Çelik, Ozan Kabak, and Orkun Kökçü were given the nod in place of Mert Müldür, Samet Akaydin, and Barış Alper Yılmaz, respectively, for the crucial play-off final.
Montella made his first substitution in the 69th minute, bringing on Barış Alper Yılmaz in place of the goalscorer, Kerem Aktürkoğlu. Aktürkoğlu had received a yellow card in the first half, adding a layer of tactical consideration to the change. Further substitutions saw Eren Elmalı, Salih Özcan, Mert Müldür, and Deniz Gül enter the fray as Montella looked to manage the game and see out the victory. Captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu was substituted off in the 83rd minute, handing the captain’s armband to Orkun Kökçü.
Unblemished Play-off Run
The Turkish side impressively navigated the World Cup play-off stage without conceding a single goal. A 1-0 win over Romania in the semi-final set up the final showdown with Kosovo, which they also won by the same scoreline.
The Road to 2026
Turkey finished second in Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers, competing against Spain, Georgia, and Bulgaria. The campaign began with a 3-2 victory away to Georgia, followed by a heavy 6-0 defeat at home to Spain.
Following the setback against Spain, the team rebounded with a convincing 6-1 away win over Bulgaria. Back-to-back home victories followed – 4-1 against Georgia and 2-0 against Bulgaria – guaranteeing a second-place finish in the group.
A 2-2 draw with Spain in the final group stage match secured Turkey’s place in the play-offs. A 1-0 victory over Romania, courtesy of a goal from Ferdi Kadıoğlu, set up the play-off final against Kosovo. The 1-0 win against Kosovo sealed their qualification for the tournament.

Third World Cup Appearance for the Crescent-Stars
This qualification marks Turkey’s third appearance in a FIFA World Cup. They previously qualified for the tournaments in 1950, 1954, and 2002. However, due to logistical challenges at the time, Turkey did not participate in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
First Foray in 1954
Turkey’s debut in the World Cup came in 1954. Drawn into a group with Hungary, West Germany, and South Korea, they lost their opening match 4-1 to West Germany but bounced back with a resounding 7-0 victory over South Korea. They then faced West Germany again in the group stage, suffering a 7-2 defeat and being eliminated from the competition.
A Third-Place Finish in 2002
Turkey’s most successful World Cup campaign came in 2002. After overcoming Austria in a play-off, they were drawn into a group with Brazil, Costa Rica, and China, finishing second. They then defeated Japan in the round of 16 and Senegal in the quarter-finals, reaching the semi-finals. A narrow 1-0 loss to Brazil in the semi-final was followed by a thrilling 3-2 victory over South Korea in the third-place play-off. Now, having secured their spot in the 2026 tournament, the Turkish national team will look to build on that past success.
Kerem Aktürkoğlu, the match-winner against Kosovo, reflected on the significance of the achievement, stating, “Many of us don’t even remember 2002. Now we will offer our brothers the chance to dream again at the 2026 World Cup.”
The Turkish team’s next confirmed fixture is yet to be announced, but preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin immediately. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the tournament draw to discover their opponents and the schedule for their return to the world stage.
