Sony Pictures has secured the rights to produce “The Comebacker,” a baseball drama starring Tom Hanks and directed by Marielle Heller. The film is based on a short story by Dave Eggers and is set to begin filming in October 2026 in Recent York.
Hanks will play the role of a pitching coach whose life is transformed after a line drive incident on the mound. The project reunites Hanks with Heller, who previously directed him in “A Gorgeous Day in the Neighborhood.” Both will serve as producers through their respective companies, Playtone and Defiant By Nature.
The film has attracted interest from multiple studios, with Sony Pictures emerging as the successful bidder. Supporting roles are being considered for actors such as Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo, according to industry sources.
Heller adapted the short story into a screenplay, and the project is described as a heartfelt tribute to the sport of baseball. Production companies involved include Playtone, Defiant By Nature, and Working Barn Productions as executive producers.
Representation for the project was handled by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA for the filmmakers, with CAA representing Hanks and Playtone, and UTA and JSSK representing Heller. Dave Eggers is represented by CAA and The Gotham Group.
The movie marks Hanks’ return to baseball-themed films following his role in “A League of Their Own.” It is positioned as a significant project for both the actor and director, continuing their creative collaboration.
As of the latest reports, filming is scheduled to commence in October 2026, with no official release date announced yet. The project remains in active development with casting discussions ongoing for supporting roles.
