Timo Werner Scores Double as San José Earthquakes Set MLS Start Record with Ninth Win in Ten Games

San Jose Earthquakes made MLS history on Saturday night, setting a recent franchise record for the best start to a season with a 3-2 comeback victory over St. Louis CITY SC at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Missouri.

The win improved San Jose to 9-1-0 in Major League Soccer regular-season play, marking the first time in club history they have achieved such a record through their first 10 matches. It also tied the franchise record for consecutive victories at six.

Timo Werner was instrumental in the turnaround, scoring both of San Jose’s second-half goals to secure his first career brace in Major League Soccer. The German forward converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute to level the score at 2-2 before scoring the winning goal in the 83rd minute.

San Jose took an early lead in the eighth minute when Preston Judd finished a move initiated by Werner and Nick Fernandez. St. Louis responded with two quick goals early in the second half, as Sergio Córdova and Marcel Hartel scored in the 52nd and 53rd minutes respectively to position the home side ahead 2-1.

Werner’s penalty came after Conrad Wallem was judged to have fouled Niko Tsakiris in the box, giving San Jose a lifeline. His second goal came when Ousseni Bouda crossed from the right wing for Werner to volley home.

The victory leaves San Jose atop the Western Conference standings, although St. Louis fell to 1-5-3 for the season and sits in 14th place in the Western Conference.

Werner now has four goals and five assists in seven MLS appearances this season, having joined the Earthquakes ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Looking ahead, San Jose will aim to extend their winning streak when they return to action, while St. Louis prepares for their U.S. Open Cup match against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday, April 29, 2025 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
