Barcelona supporters are edging closer to seeing their iconic stadium, the Spotify Camp Nou, fully restored to its former glory. With less than two years remaining until completion, including the crucial installation of a new roof, the club is meticulously planning for a grand inauguration during the 2027-28 season. The ongoing renovations, while disruptive, are progressing with optimism, though officials acknowledge the potential for unforeseen delays.
The ambitious Espai Barça project has already seen the installation of all stadium tiers, accelerating the pace of work. By April 2027, all seating and VIP boxes are slated for completion, marking a significant milestone. This will allow the stadium to operate at full capacity and maximize revenue generation. However, the most complex phase – the installation of the massive stadium roof – looms large, necessitating a temporary relocation for the Blaugrana during the early stages of the 2027-28 campaign.
Currently, the First and Second Tier seating areas have been fully re-opened and the Third Tier is being phased in throughout the 2026-27 season, including the VIP boxes. The interior work, encompassing restaurants, lounges, cabling, and VIP box interiors, represents the most challenging aspect of the project. Impermeabilization of the Third Tier stands is underway, followed by seat installation. The Lateral Third Tier is expected to open by the end of September 2026, bringing the stadium’s capacity to approximately 70,000.
By the end of 2026, seating in the Third Tier and VIP boxes in the Tribune area will be operational. Following the winter break, the club intends to fully commercialize the entire Tribune area – First and Second Tiers (already operational), plus the Third Tier and VIP boxes – with all services fully functional. At that point, the stadium will accommodate 80,000 spectators, significantly boosting revenue and ending the current period of financial strain.
The club anticipates achieving full economic benefit from the stadium by spring 2027. Following the completion of the Third Tier, work will shift to the goal areas, slated for completion by the end of April 2027. This will further enhance revenue streams. The final piece of the puzzle is the roof installation, which is currently scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027 and extend into the start of the 2027-28 season.
The roof installation is a critical path item, requiring a completely empty stadium for safety reasons. Reports indicate the installation process is expected to seize approximately four months – June, July, August, and September 2027 – forcing Barcelona to seek an alternative venue for the start of the season. Club officials have stated that all pillars supporting the roof are already in place, and delays are unacceptable.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed a preference for playing those early-season matches at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, pending necessary upgrades estimated to cost €14 million. This decision is based on technical assessments suggesting the roof installation will take four months. However, the club is hedging its bets, recognizing the potential for delays and the lower revenue potential of the Johan Cruyff stadium. Reserving the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (Montjuïc) as a backup option for the autumn of 2027 is also being considered.
The completion of the Spotify Camp Nou will pave the way for the construction of the Nou Palau, the club’s new basketball arena. This phase can only begin once the site currently occupied by the Mini Estadi is cleared. The Espai Barça project, requires close collaboration with local institutions to ensure the surrounding infrastructure is adequate.
The temporary relocation during the roof installation presents a logistical challenge for Barcelona, but the club is proactively exploring all options to minimize disruption. The successful completion of the Spotify Camp Nou remains a top priority, promising a state-of-the-art stadium and a significant boost to the club’s financial stability.
Barcelona supporters will be keenly watching the progress over the next two years, anticipating the return to a fully renovated Camp Nou and the start of a new era for the club. The 2027-28 season promises to be a landmark moment in the history of FC Barcelona.
The next key checkpoint is the expected opening of the Lateral Third Tier in September 2026, increasing the stadium’s capacity to 70,000. Fans can stay updated on the project’s progress through official club announcements and media releases.
