The Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx) has commenced the National ANUIES Championships 2026, welcoming more than 1,300 athletes to compete across a diverse range of sporting disciplines. The event, a significant fixture in the Mexican university sports calendar, underscores UAEMéx’s commitment to fostering athletic talent and providing a platform for inter-university competition.
The championships feature a broad spectrum of sports, including aquatic conditioning, badminton, gymnastics, paddle tennis, frontón, fast football (fútbol rápido), association football (fútbol asociación), beach volleyball, cheerleading, and animation. The opening ceremonies marked the beginning of what is expected to be a highly competitive and spirited event.
Aquatic Conditioning Takes Center Stage
UAEMéx boasts one of the largest and most gorgeous swimming pools in the Americas, serving as a central hub for the Aquatic Conditioning (Acondicionamiento Físico Acuático – AFA) program. The university’s AFA program offers classes in diving, utilizing one, three, five, 7.5, and 10-meter platforms. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are eligible to participate, with registration available through Red Puma on the Deporte UNAM website.
The swimming courses are structured into three levels. Level I focuses on basic skills, Level II introduces crol and backstroke styles, and Level III provides advanced technique and displacement training. Modalities include weekly sessions, Saturday sessions, and intensive courses, offering flexibility for participants.
Diverse Sporting Disciplines on Display
Beyond aquatic sports, the championships showcase a wide array of athletic pursuits. Badminton, an Olympic sport with five modalities – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles – will see intense competition. The university’s facilities are well-equipped to host these events, providing athletes with the resources they require to perform at their best.
Other sports featured include gymnastics, which will highlight both individual skill and team coordination. Paddle tennis and frontón, popular racquet sports, are also expected to draw significant crowds. The fast-paced action of fast football and the strategic play of association football will provide further entertainment for spectators. Beach volleyball, with its dynamic rallies and athletic displays, will add to the vibrant atmosphere. Finally, the energy and precision of cheerleading and animation will contribute to the overall excitement of the championships.
