Salento Cup Judo Tournament: A Huge Success with Over 170 Athletes

Judo Salento Cup Draws Over 170 Young Athletes in Successful Debut

The inaugural leg of the 2026 Judo Salento Cup took place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Palazzetto dello Sport in San Cesario di Lecce, drawing more than 170 young athletes from across the province of Lecce. The event, organized by ASD Scuola Arti Marziali Dojo Arashi San Cesario in collaboration with ASD Judo Club Shintai Supersano and Evò Real Fitness of Mauro Liaci, marked the beginning of a four-event circuit designed to promote judo throughout the Salento region.

Athletes ranging from under-10 to under-13 age groups participated in the competition, which was held under the patronage of the Municipality of San Cesario di Lecce and the Puglia sector of the Italian Judo, Wrestling, Karate and Martial Arts Federation (FIJLKAM). Local officials in attendance included San Cesario di Lecce Mayor Giuseppe Distante and Sports Assessor Luigi Renis, who likewise serves as the provincial CONI delegate.

The competition’s success was highlighted by full spectator stands and occupied tatami mats throughout the day, reflecting strong community engagement with youth martial arts in the area. Organizers emphasized that the circuit aims to foster technical development, respect, and sportsmanship among young practitioners whereas building toward a final championship ranking after all four stages.

Following the completion of all four tournament legs, a final standings will determine provincial champions in each male and female category, culminating in an awards ceremony. The initiative has received support from regional FIJLKAM leadership, including Puglia President Roberto D’Alessandro and Judo Sector President Nicola Maria Rinaldi, who praised the event’s role in expanding judo participation.

The Judo Salento Cup represents a structured effort to strengthen grassroots judo development in Puglia, providing regular competitive opportunities for young athletes while reinforcing the sport’s educational values. Organizers plan to continue the circuit throughout 2026 with three additional events scheduled after the successful opening leg.
