Riccione, Italy – A new 1.8-kilometer bike and pedestrian path is nearing completion, with the first section slated to open before Easter. The project, designed to connect the city’s seaside area with its sports facilities and existing cycling network, is already impacting local traffic patterns as crews finalize the perform.
The initial stretch of the pista ciclopedonale, as it’s known locally, runs between the Ponte Romano (Roman Bridge) and Viale Romagna. According to officials, this first phase will be ready for use in the coming weeks, offering a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians. The project aims to improve connectivity between the city’s sports center, school district and San Lorenzo neighborhood.
To allow for the final stages of construction, Viale Romagna will experience lane closures on Thursday, April 2nd, and Friday, April 3rd. These closures are timed to coincide with the school holiday, minimizing disruption to traffic flow. On Thursday, the lane heading towards the sea will be closed, while on Friday, the lane heading inland will be affected. These temporary closures will facilitate the creation of a new pedestrian and bicycle crossing.
Following the Easter holiday, work will continue with the installation of vertical and horizontal signage, as well as final finishing touches and safety coloring along the path. The second phase of the project will extend the path from Viale Romagna, along the SS16 highway, towards the existing cycle path near the Baseball Stadium. This section will weave through a green area alongside the highway.
The initiative is part of a larger plan to enhance Riccione’s “mobilità dolce” – or soft mobility – infrastructure. Mayor Daniela Angelini and Councillor for Public Works Simone Imola emphasized that the path isn’t simply a collection of isolated segments, but a carefully planned route designed to integrate sport, education, residential areas, and green spaces. “This first section of the bike path is a concrete step towards a more connected and livable Riccione,” they stated.
The new path will have a width of 2.5 meters. The project builds upon an existing ramp on Viale Bologna, incorporating it into the overall network. Starting at Viale Giulio Cesare, near the old cemetery and Roman Bridge, the path will head towards Rimini, eventually reaching the sports center. The location is in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and cycling routes.
The temporary lane closures on Viale Romagna are a necessary step to complete the project efficiently. Local authorities are encouraging residents and visitors to plan accordingly during this period. The completion of this bike path represents a significant investment in Riccione’s infrastructure and a commitment to promoting sustainable transportation options.
The project’s focus on connecting key areas of the city – the sports center, schools, and residential neighborhoods – highlights a broader trend towards prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist access in urban planning. This approach not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also supports tourism and economic development.
Once completed, the 1.8-kilometer path will provide a dedicated space for cyclists and pedestrians, reducing congestion on roadways and promoting a healthier lifestyle. The integration of green spaces along the route further enhances its appeal, creating a pleasant environment for recreation and commuting.
Looking ahead, the focus will shift to the second phase of the project, extending the path towards the baseball stadium. This expansion will further enhance the city’s cycling network and provide even more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors. The completion of the entire project is expected to solidify Riccione’s position as a cycling-friendly destination.
The next step for the project is the installation of signage and final finishing touches after Easter. Residents can expect to see the completed first phase open to the public shortly thereafter. For updates on the project and potential traffic impacts, residents are encouraged to follow the Comune di Riccione’s official channels.
