RFS and Riga FC Secure Dominant Clean-Sheet Victories

RFS Dominates Second Half to Secure Convincing Win Over Super Nova in Latvian Higher League

Riga, Latvia — Riga Football School (RFS) delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat Super Nova 3-1 in a Latvian Higher League fixture on May 18, 2024, at the Stadions Arkādija in Riga. The victory lifted RFS to the top of the league table with 43 points from 18 matches, while Super Nova remained in eighth place with 22 points.

Super Nova began the match with intensity, taking an early lead in the 22nd minute when Brazilian forward Gabriel Silva capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past RFS goalkeeper Jēkabs Sīlis. The goal came after a swift counterattack initiated by Super Nova’s midfield, catching RFS off guard in the opening stages.

RFS responded with sustained pressure but struggled to break down a compact Super Nova defense in the first half. Despite controlling 62% of possession and creating several chances, the home side failed to uncover an equalizer before halftime, leaving the visitors ahead 1-0 at the break.

The turning point arrived just four minutes into the second half when RFS midfielder Aleksejs Saveļjevs unleashed a powerful 25-yard strike that found the top corner of the net, equalizing the score at 1-1. The goal shifted momentum decisively in favor of the home side, who began to dominate possession and create clearer opportunities.

RFS doubled their lead in the 68th minute through a well-worked team move. Captain Vladislavs Gutkovskis received the ball on the edge of the box, turned sharply, and fired a low drive past Super Nova goalkeeper Māris Ķikusts to create it 2-1. The goal came after a sustained period of pressure that saw RFS register 12 shots in the second half compared to Super Nova’s three.

The visitors’ resistance collapsed completely in the 82nd minute when substitute Dario Vizinger scored RFS’s third goal. The Latvian international collected a loose ball in the penalty area after a corner kick and calmly placed his shot into the bottom corner, sealing a 3-1 victory for the home side.

RFS head coach Viktors Ņerugals praised his team’s resilience and tactical discipline after the match. “We knew Super Nova would come out strong, but we stayed patient and executed our game plan perfectly in the second half,” Ņerugals said. “The goals came from our sustained pressure and the quality we have in midfield and attack.”

Super Nova’s coach Aleksandr Basov acknowledged his team’s inability to maintain their first-half performance. “We started well and deserved our lead, but we couldn’t cope with RFS’s intensity after the break,” Basov admitted. “We need to improve our defensive organization and decision-making in the final third to compete with the top teams.”

The victory was RFS’s fifth consecutive win in the Latvian Higher League, extending their unbeaten run to seven matches. Their attacking output has been impressive during this streak, scoring 15 goals while conceding only three. Super Nova, meanwhile, suffered their third defeat in the last five league matches, highlighting their inconsistency this season.

With the win, RFS moved ahead of FK Liepāja on goal difference to claim the league lead. The club now turns its attention to the upcoming Latvian Cup semifinal against FK Auda, scheduled for May 25, 2024, at the same venue. Super Nova will look to bounce back when they host Valmiera FC in their next league fixture on May 25, 2024.
