More than 120 American associations have issued a collective warning to international travelers planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, citing risks of serious rights violations including arbitrary entry denials, intrusive social media screening, electronic device inspections, and potential detention or expulsion.
The alert, released on April 24, 2026, comes as the U.S. Prepares to co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The coalition includes influential civil rights organizations such as the ACLU, which specifically called on FIFA to pressure the U.S. Government to uphold human rights standards for visiting fans, players, journalists, and other international visitors.
According to the associations’ joint statement, travelers could face “refus d’entrée arbitraire,” heightened risks of arrest and detention, and the “application violente et anticonstitutionnelle” of immigration laws, including facial recognition-based checks. They also warned of possible “traitement cruel, inhumain et dégradant – et même la mort – en détention par l’ICE,” referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The groups urged FIFA president Gianni Infantino to leverage his reported proximity to former President Donald Trump to advocate for stronger protections. They noted that the Trump administration had intensified its immigration enforcement policies, raising concerns about how foreign nationals might be treated during the high-profile global event.
While the U.S. Government has not publicly responded to the allegations as of the warning’s release, the associations emphasized that their guidance is based on documented patterns of enforcement under current federal immigration protocols. They called for greater transparency and accountability to ensure that the World Cup remains a celebration of sport rather than a site of rights abuses.
Archysport will continue to monitor official statements from FIFA, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and civil rights monitors as the tournament approaches. Fans planning to attend are advised to consult official travel advisories and know their rights under international human rights frameworks.
Stay tuned for updates as the countdown to kickoff continues.
