Rafa Jódar Continues Dream Run to Barcelona Open Semifinals
Madrid-born teenager Rafa Jódar advanced to the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell semifinals on Thursday, defeating British No. 1 Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour on the red clay of Pista Rafa Nadal stadium.
The 19-year-old Spaniard secured his place in the last four with a commanding performance that lasted only 67 minutes, breaking Norrie’s serve three times across the two sets while saving all three break points he faced.
Jódar’s victory marks his best-ever result at an ATP 500 event and continues a remarkable breakthrough week for the Madrid native, who entered the tournament as a wildcard recipient.
Dominant Display on Home Soil
From the opening game, Jódar dictated play with aggressive baseline striking and precision serving, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Norrie managed to hold serve for the first time at 3-1.

The Briton briefly threatened a comeback in the second set, breaking back to 2-2 after saving two break points, but Jódar immediately reasserted control, winning four consecutive games to close out the match with a service winner on his second match point.
According to match statistics from the tournament’s official provider, Jódar converted 5 of 8 break point opportunities while committing just 12 unforced errors compared to Norrie’s 18.
Teenager Thrives Under Pressure
Despite carrying the weight of expectations as Spain’s rising star in the absence of injured world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, Jódar showed no signs of nerves on the biggest stage of his young career.
Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, the teenager maintained composure throughout, particularly during crucial moments in the second set when Norrie sought to regain momentum.
Jódar’s ability to handle pressure has become a hallmark of his early professional career, having previously won back-to-back Challenger titles in Oeiras and Busan earlier this spring without dropping a set.
Path to the Semifinals
Jódar’s journey to the last four began with a hard-fought three-set victory over Argentine qualifier Facundo Díaz Acosta in the opening round, followed by a straight-sets win over Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the second round.
His quarterfinal clash against Norrie, a former top-10 player and Davis Cup veteran, represented his most significant challenge to date at the ATP Tour level.
The victory improves Jódar’s head-to-head record against Norrie to 1-0 and marks his first win over a player ranked in the ATP Top 20.
What’s Next for the Spanish Hopeful
In the semifinals, Jódar will face either fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas or qualifier Pedro Martínez, depending on the outcome of the other quarterfinal match scheduled for later Thursday.
A win would guarantee Jódar his first ATP Tour final appearance and ensure a career-high ranking upon the conclusion of the tournament, regardless of the final outcome.
The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell concludes on Sunday with the final scheduled to begin at 16:00 local time (14:00 UTC) at Pista Rafa Nadal stadium.
