The game, a 12th-round fixture in the ObFZ Banská Bystrica league, was broadcast live on TV Dajto, marking a first for the project.
“Niké liga has visited a village for the fifth time. We were in Horná Nitra, Považie and Záhorie, and now it’s time to bring Niké liga to another corner of Slovakia,” said Ivan Kozák, president of the Slovak Football Association (ÚLK). “In cooperation with our partner, Niké, we will take the atmosphere of a league match, with everything that belongs to it, to the heart of Slovakia, to the village of Poniky.”
A Derby with Star Power and a National Audience
The atmosphere in Poniky was electric, boosted by the presence of several high-profile guests. Olympic gold medalist Petra Vlhová, a national icon, attended the match, adding to the excitement. Milan, the groundskeeper featured in Niké’s popular advertising campaign, was also present, as was former Slovak national team player and commentator Laco Molnár, and the K-Dance dance group. The match was expertly moderated by Slávo Jurko, and fans enjoyed a range of entertainment, including contests, performances, and a dedicated fan zone.
The game itself lived up to the hype, ending in a 2-2 draw between the two closely matched rivals. Both Poniky and Braväcovo entered the spring portion of the season tied with 19 points, making this derby even more crucial. Roman Resl, chairman of ŠK OPL Poniky, explained how the funds will be used. “We used the money to buy a lawnmower and now, thanks to you, we are planning automatic irrigation. Hopefully, with the aid of the municipality, we will succeed.” Braväcovo also plans to use the grant to bolster their youth program, having already established a B-team for their youth players and purchased latest kits and equipment.
“What I remember in 50 years, it has never happened that we didn’t have youth players. Thanks to your support, we now have a B-team for our youth players. At the same time, we bought jerseys and balls,” said Jozef Srnka, coach and manager of FK Sokol Braväcovo.
A Legacy of Local Pride and Rivalry
Both Poniky and Braväcovo boast rich footballing histories. Poniky has a connection to former player Martin Rymarenko, and once enjoyed a partnership with Italian club Cortenova, even playing a match at the iconic San Siro stadium. Braväcovo, meanwhile, can count former Slavia Prague goalkeeper Pavel Vaculčíak among its alumni, and saw former referee Erik Gemzický end his career officiating this very derby. Both clubs have a strong sense of community and a deep-rooted passion for the game.
“I am proud that our team is 100% composed of homegrown players. If their duties allow, they always come to training. It is also great that they all train together. Thanks to that, we don’t have to bring opponents here for friendly matches. We play against each other,” Srnka added.
