Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his players to remain focused despite their 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a pivotal Premier League clash, insisting that the Gunners remain favorites for the title and that his side must not develop into complacent.
Speaking after the Etihad Stadium showdown, Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal’s position at the top of the table while emphasizing that his team still has a chance to fight until the end of the season.
“So far, they are the best team in England, but of course we extend the chance and the hopes to fight until the end,” Guardiola said, according to verified reports from the match.
The win moved Manchester City to three points behind Arsenal, with six games remaining — one more than their rivals — and a game in hand against Burnley scheduled for midweek. Guardiola noted that a victory at Turf Moor would see City top the league for the first time since August.
Despite the momentum gained from the win, the City manager stressed that the title race remains wide open and warned against reading too much into a single result.
“It was a good advert for the Premier League. They don’t allow you to go through the process, they’re so aggressive. They are good in the duels and one of the most competitive teams I ever faced in my career in terms of duels and one against one. long balls with Havertz and Rice, second balls — fantastic,” he added.
Guardiola also reflected on the intensity of the contest, noting that both teams had opportunities and that the outcome was decided by fine margins.
“We had momentum, they had momentum, we had chances, they had chances. At the end in these type of games, it is little margins,” he said.
The Spaniard urged his squad to celebrate the performance but maintain focus, pointing to the immediate challenge ahead.
“I’ve been so demanding, but the reality is it’s just one game. They are top of the league with one goal difference [better than Man City]. We have to enjoy it, celebrate it, capture the good things, but don’t lose the focus. The focus is in three days, we go to Burnley.”
Injury concerns were also raised following the match, with Guardiola confirming that midfielder Rodri picked up a groin problem during the game and was substituted late in the second half.
“Some groin,” Guardiola said when asked about the Spain international’s condition. “The doctors will make tests later or tomorrow.”
The update on Rodri’s fitness adds uncertainty to City’s preparations for the Burnley fixture, which could prove decisive in shifting the balance of power in the title race.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have remained unbeaten in the Champions League this season and have led the Premier League since October, underscoring the difficulty of overtaking them.
Guardiola acknowledged the consistency of Mikel Arteta’s side, stating that beating them once is hard, let alone twice in a short span.
“People say we have momentum but when you see them [Arsenal] compete they are an extraordinary team, otherwise you cannot be all season top of the Premier League and unbeaten in the Champions League.”
He added: “I know how difficult it is to beat them once, imagine twice. They stepped a little bit higher in the Carabao Cup final [which City won]. Who is top of the league? We are not. In goal difference, they are better. But of course, we have hopes and still extend the chance to fight until the end.”
The victory was sealed by a second-half goal from Erling Haaland, following an early opener from Rayan Cherki that was quickly canceled out by Kai Havertz.
Guardiola praised the quality of both teams, calling the encounter a “good advertisement worldwide” for English football.
As the Premier League enters its final stretch, the manager’s message is clear: respect the opponent, embrace the challenge, but never lose sight of the immediate task.
Manchester City’s next fixture against Burnley on Wednesday represents their next confirmed checkpoint in the pursuit of reclaiming the top spot.
