Breakthrough for Edgar Empis: French Para Table Tennis Talent Secures Medals in World Debut

The international para table tennis circuit has a novel name to watch. Edgar Empis, a rising star from Boos, near Rouen, has returned to France with a pair of medals after a whirlwind introduction to the world stage this March.

Competing in his first two international outings on the world circuit, the young athlete demonstrated that he belongs among the elite. Empis secured both a silver and a bronze medal during the ITTF World Para Challenger events held in Italy and Spain, marking a significant milestone for the athlete and the Boos handisport community.

Double Success in Italy and Spain

The journey began in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, from March 18 to 21. Under the guidance of coach Jérôme Juge and the French handisport team staff, Empis dove into a high-pressure environment featuring top-tier global athletes. While the tournament tested his limits, it was in the men’s doubles category where Empis found his rhythm.

Partnering with Clément Latorre of Toulouse, Empis showcased the chemistry the duo has developed while playing together in the France group this season. Their coordination paid off with a bronze medal in the men’s doubles event.

The momentum carried over to the Costa Brava in Spain, where the second World Para Challenger took place from March 26 to 29. Empis and Latorre elevated their performance on Spanish soil, climbing the podium to claim the silver medal in the men’s doubles.

Testing the Waters in Singles

While the doubles results provided the hardware, Empis’ performances in singles offered a glimpse of his ceiling. In Italy, he faced a daunting challenge against Andersson, currently ranked No. 9 in the world. Although Empis fell 3-1, the narrow margin against a top-10 opponent signaled that the young Frenchman can compete with the world’s best.

For those unfamiliar with the format, these ITTF World Para Challenger events are critical for athletes to gain experience and rankings. Matches are divided into singles, doubles, and team events, with players grouped by international classifications to ensure fair competition based on the nature of their impairment.

A Foundation of Support

The rise of Edgar Empis is a collective effort. His father, Sébastien Empis, who serves as the head of the handisport section for the Boos club, has been instrumental in his development. The transition from local success to the world circuit requires not just talent, but significant logistical and financial backing.

Empis has acknowledged the critical role of regional support in his journey. Financial backing from the Région Normandie and the Métropole Rouen Normandie has enabled him to pursue this rigorous international schedule and maintain his training regimen.

This support system is now facilitating his integration into the France collective within the “Espoirs” (Hopefuls) group, a pathway designed to groom the next generation of French para-athletes for major championships.

Looking Ahead

With two medals in his first two international appearances, Empis has already validated the investment made by his club and region. His ability to adapt quickly to the ITTF PARA circuit suggests a steep upward trajectory.

The focus now shifts to maintaining this form as he continues to represent France on the world stage. For a player who just went toe-to-toe with a world top-10 seed, the goal is no longer just participation—it is contention.
