Dennis Schröder’s Playoff Struggles: Cavaliers Tie Series with Raptors After Offensive Collapse
The Cleveland Cavaliers surrendered a seven-point lead late in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference playoff series against the Toronto Raptors, allowing Toronto to force a 2-2 series tie with a victory on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
According to Cleveland.com, the Cavaliers held a seven-point advantage before experiencing an offensive drought that allowed the Raptors to regain control and secure the win. The loss evened the best-of-seven series at two games apiece as it shifted back to Cleveland for Game 5.
Dennis Schröder, the veteran German point guard acquired by Cleveland at the 2026 trade deadline, was among the Cavaliers players who struggled offensively during the critical stretch. Schröder has brought playoff experience to Cleveland’s roster, having appeared in over 70 NBA playoff games throughout his career that includes stops with the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, and Sacramento Kings before joining the Cavaliers in 2026.
The Cavaliers acquired Schröder in a three-team trade at the 2026 NBA trade deadline, sending DeAndre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings while also receiving Keon Ellis in the deal. Schröder expressed appreciation for joining a winning organization after spending time with non-playoff teams earlier in his career.
“I started on a team where we didn’t really win, so to arrive to that situation is really meaningful, and I don’t take it for granted because to be with a winning organization is always great,” Schröder said after joining Cleveland. “So really grateful that I’m in a winning organization that wants to win.”
The native of Braunschweig, Germany has established himself as one of Germany’s most decorated basketball players. Schröder led Germany to victory at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, earning tournament MVP honors, and helped secure Germany’s first major medal in 17 years with a bronze finish at EuroBasket 2022. He added another individual accolade by being named MVP of EuroBasket 2025.
Schröder’s professional journey began in Germany with SG Braunschweig and Phantoms Braunschweig before he was selected 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA Draft. His NBA career has spanned multiple franchises, giving him the veteran perspective that Cleveland sought when acquiring him at the trade deadline.
Off the court, Schröder has maintained ties to his hometown, serving as the sole owner of Basketball Loewen Braunschweig in the German Basketball Bundesliga. He has been the majority shareholder of the club since 2018.
The Cavaliers and Raptors will now continue their series in Cleveland for Game 5, with both teams looking to gain a crucial advantage in the best-of-seven matchup. The winner of Game 5 will take a 3-2 series lead heading into potential Games 6 and 7.
