Riku Okada Claims First All-Japan Title, Sets Sights on Asian Games Gold
Riku Okada has officially announced his arrival on the national stage. The 23-year-old standout from Sapporo captured his first title in the men’s 90kg category at the All-Japan Selected Judo Weight Category Championships, securing his place as Japan’s representative for the upcoming Asian Games.
The tournament, which concluded on April 5 at the Fukuoka International Center in Fukuoka City, served as the primary selection battle for the national squad. For Okada, representing Asahi Kasei, the victory is more than just a trophy. it is a ticket to the 20th Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
A Dominant Path to Victory
Okada’s run through the bracket was marked by technical precision and aggression. A pivotal moment occurred during the semifinals, where Okada faced Daiki Obata. In a display of timing and power, Okada executed a decisive ippon seoi nage (one-arm shoulder throw) to secure an ippon victory, propelling him into the finals.

By claiming the 90kg crown, Okada has transitioned from a rising prospect to a primary contender. Speaking on his ambitions for the fall, the Sapporo native was unequivocal about his expectations for the Aichi-Nagoya games, stating that he will “definitely” win the gold medal.
The Broader National Landscape
While Okada dominated the 90kg division, the championships highlighted a shifting guard in other weight classes. The All Japan Judo Federation used the event to determine representatives for both the Asian Games and the World Championships.
In the 100kg+ heavyweight division, Kanta Nakano of Asahi Kasei emerged victorious. Nakano utilized a suffocating grip to shut out teammate Hyoga Ota in the final. This victory earned Nakano a spot on the Japanese team for the World Championships, which will be held in Azerbaijan this October.
The 100kg category saw an unexpected turn as Yuta Kasai, a recent graduate representing Toyota Tsusho, entered the tournament as a “dark horse” and managed to seize the title in a crowded, highly competitive field.
For those unfamiliar with the selection process, these championships are the gold standard for Japanese judo. The winner of each weight class typically earns a provisional spot on the national team, provided they meet the criteria set by the federation’s strengthening committee.
Road to Aichi-Nagoya
The 20th Asian Games represent the largest sporting event in Asia, and for Japan, hosting the games in Aichi-Nagoya adds immense pressure and prestige. The judo competition will feature seven weight classes for both men and women, alongside team events.
Okada’s ascent is a significant boost for the 90kg division. His ability to perform under the pressure of the Fukuoka International Center suggests he is mentally prepared for the atmosphere of a major multi-sport event. With a few months of preparation remaining, the focus now shifts from domestic dominance to international gold.
