Over 200 athletes gathered in the rural district of Gia Lâm, Hanoi, for the 2026 edition of the Phù Đổng Badminton Club tournament, marking one of the largest grassroots badminton events in northern Vietnam this year. Held from March 10 to March 15 at the Phù Đổng Community Sports Center, the competition drew participants from provincial clubs, university teams, and amateur circuits across the Red River Delta, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity at the community level.
The tournament, organized annually by the Phù Đổng Badminton Club in coordination with the Gia Lâm District Sports Department, featured singles and doubles divisions for men, women, and mixed pairs across five age categories. Officials confirmed that 204 athletes registered for the event, with 187 ultimately competing after last-minute withdrawals due to scheduling conflicts and minor injuries.
In the men’s singles final, Nguyễn Văn Đức of the Ninh Hiep Cultural Center team defeated Hoàng Minh Quân of Hanoi University in a tightly contested three-game match, 21–18, 19–21, 21–17. Đức’s victory was instrumental in securing the overall team title for Ninh Hiep, which accumulated the highest points across all disciplines to claim first place in the team standings.
The Ninh Hiep Cultural Center squad, known for its strong youth development program and consistent performance in regional tournaments, edged out the host Phù Đổng Badminton Club by 12 points in the team classification. Phù Đổng finished second, whereas the Hà Đông Youth Sports Association took third, completing the podium.
“We’ve been building this team for three years, focusing on discipline, footwork, and mental resilience,” said Trần Thị Mai, head coach of Ninh Hiep, in a post-match interview with the Gia Lâm Sports Bulletin. “Today, the players executed our game plan perfectly — especially in the mixed doubles and women’s singles, where we gained crucial momentum.”
Women’s singles was won by Lê Thị Hoa of Ninh Hiep, who defeated Phạm Ngọc Anh of Phù Đổng in straight games, 21–15, 21–13. In men’s doubles, the pairing of Trần Quốc Việt and Phạm Đình Toàn from Ninh Hiep overwhelmed their opponents with aggressive net play and precise back-court clears, winning the final 21–16, 21–19.
Mixed doubles saw a surprise breakthrough by the Phù Đổng duo of Nguyễn Lê Bình and Hoàng Thị Lan, who upset the favored Ninh Hiep pair in the semifinals before falling to Lê Văn Sơn and Nguyễn Thị Thảo of Hà Đông in the final, 21–18, 15–21, 21–19. The match, lasting 42 minutes, featured several deuce rallies and was praised by spectators for its high intensity and sportsmanship.
Attendance averaged 300 spectators per day, with peak crowds of over 800 during the weekend finals. Local vendors set up food stalls outside the venue, and traditional music performances were held during breaks, adding a festive atmosphere to the competition. Organizers noted that the event served not only as a sporting contest but also as a community gathering that reinforced local pride in Phù Đổng’s cultural heritage.
The Phù Đổng Badminton Club, founded in 2010, has grown from a small neighborhood group into one of the most active amateur badminton organizations in Gia Lâm District. It regularly hosts monthly friendly matches and annual tournaments, aiming to promote physical activity and youth engagement in sports. According to club president Lê Văn Sơn, participation has increased by 40% over the past two years, driven in part by school outreach programs and improved access to indoor courts.
Badminton remains one of Vietnam’s most popular recreational sports, with an estimated 8.5 million players nationwide, according to the Vietnam Sports Administration’s 2025 survey. While professional badminton in Vietnam still lags behind regional powers like Indonesia and Thailand, grassroots tournaments like the one in Phù Đổng play a vital role in talent identification and community health initiatives.
Looking ahead, the Ninh Hiep Cultural Center team is preparing for the Hanoi Provincial Badminton Championships scheduled for May 2026, where they will aim to defend their title. The Phù Đổng Badminton Club plans to host its next open tournament in September, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival, and hopes to attract even broader regional participation.
For fans and players interested in following upcoming badminton events in northern Vietnam, the Gia Lâm District Sports Department maintains an updated calendar on its official website, including registration details and venue information. Results from the 2026 Phù Đổng tournament have been archived on the club’s social media pages and shared with local schools to encourage youth involvement in sports.
The success of this year’s event underscores the enduring appeal of badminton as a accessible, inclusive sport that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. As one longtime spectator remarked while leaving the venue, “It’s not just about winning — it’s about showing up, playing hard, and sharing the joy of the game.”
The next checkpoint for the Phù Đổng Badminton Club is its monthly friendly match scheduled for April 5, 2026, at the same community center. Fans are encouraged to follow the club’s Facebook page for updates on registration, schedules, and highlights from past matches.
