Naomi Osaka Advances to Madrid Open Fourth Round with Straight-Sets Win Over Angelina Kalinina
Naomi Osaka secured her place in the fourth round of the Madrid Open with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ukrainian qualifier Angelina Kalinina on Saturday, marking her second appearance in the tournament’s last 16 in seven years.
The win, which came in one hour and 16 minutes on the red clay of Madrid’s Caja Mágica, improves Osaka’s clay-court record for the season and sets up a highly anticipated fourth-round clash with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Osaka, seeded 14th and ranked 15th globally, dominated the opening set, breaking Kalinina’s serve twice to race to a 4-0 lead before closing it out 6-1. The second set proved more competitive, with both players holding serve early, but Osaka’s decisive break in the seventh game proved pivotal as she served out the match to love in the following game.
Osaka converted six of 13 break-point opportunities (46%) while Kalinina managed just two breaks in twelve chances (17%), highlighting the Japanese star’s superior return game on the challenging clay surface.
According to match statistics, Osaka recorded a 62% first-serve points won percentage and maintained a strong 63% success rate on second-serve points, demonstrating consistency under pressure. She limited unforced errors while Kalinina struggled with four double faults compared to Osaka’s single.
The victory represents Osaka’s third consecutive year reaching at least the third round in Madrid, extending her streak to seven appearances overall at the WTA 1000 event. Her best result here remains a quarterfinal appearance in 2019.
For Kalinina, the loss ends a promising run through qualifying where she defeated 23rd-seeded Marie Bouzkova to reach the main draw. The Ukrainian, currently ranked 110th worldwide, had reached a career-high ranking of 25th in 2022 but has struggled to maintain consistency on the tour.
In her post-match on-court interview, Osaka acknowledged the challenges of clay-court tennis while expressing satisfaction with her performance:
“Today I tried to improve from my previous match and really focus on constructing points better on this surface. Clay demands patience, and I felt I executed that well today, especially with my return game.”
She added regarding her upcoming challenge against Sabalenka:
“Playing Aryna is always a tough test. She’s been incredible on clay this season, but I know my game. If I serve well and stay aggressive on returns, I can compete with anyone.”
The victory marks Osaka’s first win over a Ukrainian opponent at the Madrid Open and continues her strong head-to-head record against qualifiers, having won all three such encounters at this tournament level.
Looking ahead, Osaka’s fourth-round meeting with Sabalenka represents a significant milestone – it will be their first encounter on clay and only their third meeting with Sabalenka leading their head-to-head 2-0 coming into the match.
The winner of that clash will face either 29th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko or the victor between Amanda Anisimova and Anna Kalinskaya in the quarterfinals, setting up a potentially blockbuster semifinal scenario depending on results elsewhere in the draw.
For Osaka, advancing to the fourth round guarantees her at least 120 WTA ranking points and approximately $35,000 in prize money, with additional rewards available for each subsequent round cleared in Madrid.
The Madrid Open continues through May 3rd, with Osaka’s potential quarterfinal match scheduled for Tuesday, April 28th if she defeats Sabalenka.
