Nadiem Amiri Clashes With Strasbourg Opponent After Mainz’s Conference League Exit

Eklat in der Conference League: Provocateur Celebration Sparks Brawl as Mainz Players Lose Cool Against Strasbourg

Mainz 05’s bitter UEFA Conference League exit against Racing Strasbourg descended into chaos after the final whistle, as German international Nadiem Amiri shoved Strasbourg striker Martial Godo in response to a provocative shirt celebration near the Mainz fans.

The incident occurred immediately following Strasbourg’s 4-0 second-leg victory at Stade de la Meinau, which overturned Mainz’s 2-0 first-leg advantage and eliminated the Bundesliga side 4-2 on aggregate. As players exchanged handshakes, Godo sprinted toward the Mainz supporters and hung his shirt on the corner flag — an act Amiri interpreted as a deliberate provocation.

Amiri chased the Ivorian forward and bowled him over at full pace, triggering an immediate escalation. Mainz striker Phillip Tietz joined the confrontation, loudly berating Godo and drawing in players from both sides. Stewards eventually intervened to separate the teams and restore order.

Referee Joao Pinheiro showed Amiri a straight red card for the shove and Godo a yellow for his provocation. Strasbourg forward Emmanuel Emegha later told Canal+ that his team had “kept our cool” despite feeling disrespected the previous week, adding: “Last week they didn’t respect us, but we kept our cool. We got our own back on the pitch.”

Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel downplayed the incident as “childish,” stating: “There was a scuffle and Nadiem then pushed his opponent. The referee saw it. It’s all actually unnecessary, but no large drama.” Meanwhile, Mainz manager Urs Fischer urged his players to accept defeat gracefully, saying: “When you lose 0–4, Try to congratulate the opposition and not get riled up. I understand that, though. In the heat of the moment, you’re disappointed. I can’t say exactly what happened there; I was high-fiving the players.”

On the pitch, Mainz offered little resistance as Strasbourg dominated the return leg. Despite a promising 2-0 win in the first leg at the Opel Arena, Mainz failed to register a shot on target in France and were deservedly beaten 4-0, ending their European campaign.

Amiri, who wears the number 10 shirt for Mainz, has made 65 appearances and scored 18 goals since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. The Germany international previously played for TSG Hoffenheim and had a loan spell at Genoa during the 2022–23 season. He earned nine caps for the Germany national team, scoring once, and represented Germany at the 2020 Olympics.

Strasbourg’s victory advanced them to the UEFA Conference League semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the tie between Fiorentina and Viktoria Plzeň. Mainz, meanwhile, return to Bundesliga action with a home match against VfL Bochum on April 25, 2026.

The altercation serves as a stark reminder of how quickly emotions can flare in elite football, even in defeat. Even as Mainz will appear to move forward domestically, the images of Amiri’s confrontation with Godo are likely to linger as a defining moment of their European exit.
