The Murjāņu Sporta ģimnāzija (MSĢ) and Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes (RSU) second team have secured their places in the semifinals of the Latvian Women’s Volleyball League, too known as the Nacionālā līga. Both teams navigated challenging quarterfinal series to reach this stage of the competition, setting the stage for compelling matchups in the coming weeks.
MSĢ demonstrated their strength in a two-game series against Jūrmalas Volejbola klubs/Jūrmalas Sporta skola. The first match, played on their home court, saw MSĢ emerge victorious with a 3-1 scoreline (25:22, 22:25, 25:21, 25:16). They followed up that performance with a decisive 3-0 win in the second game (25:20, 25:15, 25:17), closing out the series 2-1.
The first encounter was a hard-fought battle. Jūrmalas Volejbola klubs mounted a strong comeback in the second set, rallying from a 6-12 deficit. A block by Alise Juršāne-Piņķe brought them to a 17-16 lead, and two “aces” from Elīze Elza Jansone tied the score at 21-21. Despite a strong serving performance from Veronika Aleksejeva, Jūrmalas ultimately secured the set 25-22. However, MSĢ regained control, with Marta Pavlovska delivering the winning point in the fourth set with a powerful attack, finishing the match 25-16. Jansone and Oša contributed significantly to MSĢ’s serving game, scoring five and four points respectively from the service line, while Pavlovska led the team with 11 points overall.
The second match, held at Sējas Sporta nams, saw MSĢ capture control from the outset. After initially falling behind in the second set, with Jūrmalas briefly leading 3-0 following an ace by Grēta Ella Jirgena, MSĢ responded with a four-point run to take the lead (8-6) and ultimately win the set convincingly. In the third set, Jūrmalas gained a substantial advantage, leading 13-6 after a difficult serve from Juršāne-Piņķe. However, MSĢ fought back with a series of strong plays, ultimately securing the match with an ace from Elza Puķīte, finishing the set 25-17. Pavlovska again led the scoring for MSĢ with 13 points, supported by Oša with 11, while Linda Račiņa was the top scorer for Jūrmalas with 10 points.
Meanwhile, RSU 2 also faced a challenging path to the semifinals. Their quarterfinal series against Liepājas Sporta spēļu skola went the distance, requiring three matches to determine the winner. The first match saw Liepājas Sporta spēļu skola win 3-2 (25:22, 19:25, 10:25, 25:22, 15:4), leveling the series at 1-1. The second match, played on Monday in Liepāja, was another five-set thriller, ultimately resulting in a 3-2 victory (23:25, 23:25, 25:20, 25:16, 15:10) for RSU 2, securing their spot in the semifinals.
The initial sets of the decisive third match were closely contested. Liepājas Sporta spēļu skola mounted a comeback in the first set, with Alise Armale securing the winning point with a strong attack (25:23). They carried that momentum into the second set, winning by the same score (25:23). However, RSU 2 rallied in the third set, initially falling behind before mounting a comeback sparked by a block from Ginta Leveika, ultimately winning 25-20. They continued their momentum into the fourth set, dominating from start to finish with a 25-16 victory, capped off by an ace from Elīza Beata Germova.
The final set saw RSU 2 take an early lead, jumping out to a 6-0 and then an 8-2 advantage. Despite a determined effort from Liepājas Sporta spēļu skola, led by Austra Štāla, they were unable to close the gap. Samanta Leona sealed the victory for RSU 2 with a decisive attack, finishing the set 15-10. Loreta Martinsone and Annija Veigelte led the scoring for RSU 2 with 21 points each, while Alise Armale was the top scorer for Liepājas Sporta spēļu skola with 18 points.
The semifinal matchups are now set. “Mārupes SC” will face RSU 2 in one semifinal, while Daugavpils Sporta skola will take on Murjāņu Sporta ģimnāzija in the other. This second semifinal will feature a clash between younger players, promising an exciting contest. The matches involving Mārupes SC and RSU are scheduled to take place in Mārupe on Friday.
These results mark a significant step forward for both MSĢ and RSU 2, demonstrating the growing strength of Latvian women’s volleyball. The semifinals promise to be a showcase of talent and determination as these teams compete for a place in the championship final.
