Beiden Golf-Profis gelang eine 67er-Runde auf dem legendären Kurs im US-Bundesstaat Georgia. Für McIlroy war der Auftakt mit fünf Schlägen unter Par die beste Start-Runde seit 2011, als er mit 65 Schlägen ins Turnier gestartet war. Der Star aus Nordirland hatte im vergangenen Jahr erstmals das Masters gewonnen und damit das letzte noch fehlende Major in seiner Karriere.
“Ich denke, ein Sieg beim Masters macht es einfacher, ein zweites Mal zu gewinnen”, sagte der 36 Jahre alte McIlroy. Es sei noch immer ein schwieriger Golf-Kurs und es sei nicht immer einfach, einem Schlag zu vertrauen. “Aber ich denke, es ist einfacher für mich, diese Schläge zu machen und mich nicht so sehr darüber zu sorgen, wo sie landen. Denn am Ende des Tages kann ich noch immer in die Umkleide der Champions und mein grünes Jackett anziehen.” Sieger in Augusta bekommen ein grünes Jackett für ihren Erfolg.
Weltranglistenerster mit drei Schlägen Rückstand auf die Spitze
McIlroy hatte keinen sonderlich guten Start, kam dann aber immer besser in Schwung und beendete den Auftakt mit insgesamt sechs Birdies und einem Bogey. Bei einem Birdie brauchen Golfer einen Schlag weniger als üblich, bei einem Bogey ist ein Schlag mehr.
Mit zwei Schlägen Rückstand auf Burns und McIlroy ins Ziel kamen Kurt Kitayama, Jason Day und Patrick Reed. Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffele und der Weltranglistenerste Scottie Scheffler spielten alle zwei unter Par und gehen mit drei Schlägen Rückstand auf die Spitze in den zweiten von vier Wettkampftagen. Im ersten Jahr, nachdem sich Ex-Champion Bernhard Langer aus Altersgründen verabschiedet hatte, war kein Deutscher dabei. Auch Tiger Woods war nach seinem jüngsten Autounfall nicht am Start.
McIlroy’s success was driven by an aggressive approach to the course’s long holes. He birdied all four par 5s on Thursday, a feat he has not accomplished in a Masters round since Sunday in 2019. His iron play was particularly dominant; he gained three strokes on the field in strokes gained approach, marking the fifth consecutive Masters round where he has gained more than a full stroke on the competition in that category.
The Amen Corner Surge
While McIlroy ground out his result, Sam Burns used a pivotal stretch through the most treacherous part of the course to seize the lead. The world No. 33 surged through Amen Corner, knocking in a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-3 12th before sticking a 50-yard third shot to 11 feet at the par-5 13th to convert another. Burns sealed his early lead with a birdie at the par-5 15th.
The 67 represents the lowest career round for Burns in his fifth start at Augusta National. Following his round, Burns noted that success at this venue often depends on playing the par 5s well, a strategy he executed effectively on Thursday.
A Testing Thursday at Augusta
Despite idyllic weather conditions, Augusta National played firm and swift, presenting a significant challenge to the field. The scoring average for the first round was 74.65, the highest opening-round average recorded at the Masters since 2017.
