Mārupe Volleyball Team Defends National League Championship Title

Mārupes SC Defends Latvian National League Title: Plūme Credits Defensive Brilliance

Mārupes SC has once again ascended to the top of Latvian women’s volleyball, successfully defending their championship title in the Nacionālā līga. In a decisive final match held in Mārupe, the home team secured the victory by defeating Daugavpils Sporta skola in three sets.

Following the triumph, head coach Pēteris Plūme pointed to a masterclass in defensive play and tactical precision as the catalysts for the win. While the offense provided the points, Plūme emphasized that the team’s ability to dig and defend kept the momentum firmly in their favor.

Tactical Execution: The Serve Strategy

The victory was not merely a result of raw talent but a calculated tactical approach. Plūme revealed that the game plan centered heavily on the serve, specifically targeting key players on the Daugavpils roster to disrupt their rhythm.

During the first set, Mārupes SC focused their serves on Mikulova, who was playing as a “pusīte.” As the match progressed into the second set, the strategy shifted when Sauša took over the “pusīte” role, with Mikulova moving to a diagonal position. Plūme noted that the team successfully adapted their serving targets to follow Sauša, effectively neutralizing the opposition’s setup.

The MVP Performance

While the team effort was cohesive, Liene Šimkuse emerged as the standout performer of the tournament. Plūme described Šimkuse’s contributions in the back row as “miracles,” noting that her exceptional defensive work was a primary reason for the title defense.

Due to her dominant presence on the court, Šimkuse was named the final tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). According to Plūme, her performance was so definitive that there were virtually no other candidates for the honor.

The depth of the squad likewise played a role in the victory. Luīze Garda, coming off the bench, contributed significantly with strong serving and reliable play in zone six, ensuring that the intensity did not drop during rotations.

Tournament Standings and Bronze Medalists

The final stages of the championship also determined the rest of the podium. RSU 2 claimed the bronze medal after defeating Murjāņu Sporta ģimnāzija in the third-place deciding match.

Annija Veigelte was the most scoring player for RSU 2. Reflecting on their success, Veigelte indicated that the key to their bronze medal was the team’s ability to impose their own style of play on the opponent and avoid significant errors.

About Coach Pēteris Plūme

The success of Mārupes SC is guided by Pēteris Plūme, a Category A sports specialist with professional higher education from LSPA. While leading the women’s team to national glory, Plūme also maintains a deep commitment to youth development at the Mārupes novada Sporta skola, where he serves as a beach volleyball coach.

His coaching portfolio extends to several youth age groups, including players born between 2005–2006, 2010–2011, and 2012–2014, bridging the gap between grassroots development and elite national competition.
