German Tight End Marlin Klein Selected by Houston Texans in 2026 NFL Draft
Houston Texans selected Michigan Wolverines tight end Marlin Klein with the 59th overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, marking a significant moment for German-American football representation in the league.
The 23-year-old Cologne native expressed disbelief at his selection, stating it was “hard to put into words” during his first comments as a Texans player. Klein will join quarterback C.J. Stroud in Houston after playing college football at the University of Michigan.
“I think about the little boy in Germany who used to watch the NFL and dreamed of playing at this level,” Klein said. “Today this dream has become reality. But at the same time I know: This represents only the beginning.”
Klein’s journey to the NFL began through the Gridiron Imports Foundation, which helps international football players pursue opportunities in the United States. After moving to the U.S., he played high school football at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee in Georgia, where he was rated a three-star recruit.
At Michigan, Klein redshirted as a freshman and appeared in just two games. He gained more experience in 2023, playing in 10 games and recording one reception. His role expanded in 2024 and 2025, when he served as a team captain and was voted the team’s most-improved player in 2024 after recording 13 catches. As a junior in 2025, he had 24 receptions before declaring for the NFL Draft.
Scouting reports highlighted Klein’s physical attributes as strengths, noting his 6-foot-6 frame creates leverage points and allows him to accelerate through contact. Analysts praised his strong hands and efficiency in eluding traffic although maintaining route timing. Although, concerns were raised about his limited college production, with only one career touchdown in his college career, and his relative inexperience with just 12 college starts.
The Texans’ selection of Klein came after addressing offensive line and defensive line needs with their first two picks. General manager Nick Caserio and the Houston front office viewed Klein as adding needed depth at the tight end position.
Klein’s contract value was reported as $8.185 million for his rookie deal, consistent with slot value for the 59th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. His physical measurements were listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 248 pounds during the pre-draft process.
Reflecting on his selection, Klein emphasized his belief in his ability to compete at the NFL level. “I always believed I could compete at this level,” he said. “With the Texans, a team believed in me – and I will do everything to repay that trust.” He expressed ambitions beyond being a roster player, stating he wants to “produce a name for myself in the NFL” and contribute to game outcomes while pursuing “maximum success.”
The selection continues a trend of increasing international representation in the NFL, with Klein joining a growing group of players developing through pathways like the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program and foundations such as Gridiron Imports.
As Klein prepares for his rookie season with the Houston Texans, he will look to earn playing time behind established tight ends on the roster and contribute to special teams units while adapting to the professional game’s speed, and physicality.
The Texans will begin organized team activities in the spring, with training camp opening in late July as Klein works to transition from college standout to NFL contributor.
