Manchester City Beats Burnley to Take Premier League Lead as Pep Guardiola Laments Tough Schedule: “We Played a Brutal Match Sunday, Hard to Replay Three Days Later”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged his side’s failure to capitalize on chances created during their 1-0 Premier League victory at Burnley, attributing the wastefulness in part to the physical toll of Sunday’s demanding match against Arsenal.

Guardiola’s comments came after City secured the three points that lifted them to the top of the Premier League table for the first time since August, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in the first half at Turf Moor.

The Catalan manager admitted his team had opportunities to extend the lead but lacked the necessary composure in the final third, a shortcoming he linked to the emotional and physical exertion required in their previous fixture.

“We had chances. We have to win the games, but it was clear, clear, clear. We were not ‘umph’ in the last part of the shots. Sometimes it’s the fatigue,” Guardiola said in his post-match press conference. “I had the feeling if we scored at 2-0 it will be more relaxed and we could be more composed in the final third.”

He elaborated on the context of the fixture congestion, referencing the intense encounter with Arsenal just three days prior: “Considering the last three days and the emotion and physicality in the game we played, we make an extraordinary game.”

Despite the missed opportunities, Guardiola emphasized that securing the victory remained the primary objective, particularly given the challenges posed by the quick turnaround between matches.

“Winning is the main target. Considering the last three days and the emotion and physicality in the game we played, we make an extraordinary game. The chances we created we could score more goals but the important thing is every game winning,” he stated.

The victory allowed City to overtake Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League, capitalizing on the Gunners’ recent home defeat to Bournemouth which ended their nine-point lead at the top.

Guardiola praised his team’s overall performance despite the frustration of not converting chances, noting improvements in defensive organization as the match progressed.

“I think we played really, really decent. I’m pretty sure. I didn’t see all the images and the chances that we had, but I had a feeling that we had a lot. And just for many of these types of games, we score the second or the third, for the chances that we create, we deserve it, everything is more fluid, more natural,” he added.

The manager also addressed his own demeanor during the match, clarifying that he was not frustrated despite appearing so on the touchline, given the ultimate outcome of securing three points and moving to the top of the league.

“I was not frustrated, why would I be? We won three points, we are top of the league. Of course we can do better but the guys did everything,” Guardiola concluded.

The result confirmed Burnley’s relegation to the Championship, while City now look ahead to their next Premier League fixture as they aim to maintain their position at the top of the table with just five matches remaining in the season.
