Court Orders Arrest of Al-Thani Family in Málaga CF Case
A Spanish provincial court has issued a definitive arrest warrant for Qatari businessman Abdullah Al-Thani and his three sons in connection with alleged financial irregularities at Málaga CF, judicial sources confirmed on Wednesday.
The order, issued by the Audiencia Provincial de Málaga, comes after prosecutors had previously requested a European Detention Order for the Al-Thani family in October over claims of embezzlement, maladministration, and abusive agreements during their stewardship of the Andalusian club.
According to verified court documents referenced by local Málaga media, the arrest directive is described as “immediate, without any margin for allegation,” marking a significant escalation in the ongoing judicial proceedings against the family that has controlled the club since 2010.
The development follows closely on the heels of a separate ruling in which the Málaga Mercantile Court ordered Blue Bay, the Spanish hotel and real estate group that holds 49 percent of Málaga CF, to pay approximately 589,000 euros to the club for historical jersey sponsorship agreements deemed improper by the court.
Judicial sources indicate that Judge María de los Ángeles Ruiz, who has been overseeing the case at Málaga’s Number 14 Investigating Court, now holds the final authority to execute the arrest order after reviewing the provincial court’s ruling and the prosecution’s position.
The Al-Thani family’s legal troubles intensified recently when Abdullah Al-Thani regained control of Nasir Bin Abdullah & Sons SL, one of the holding companies previously managed by court-appointed administrator José María Muñoz, just days before the arrest warrant was issued.
Prosecutors first moved to open a criminal trial against the jeque and his sons — Rakan, Nasser, and Nayef Al-Thani — in June, citing suspicions of siphoning club funds through related-party transactions and imposing unfavorable commercial deals that benefited entities linked to the family.
Málaga CF, which currently competes in Spain’s second division, has been under judicial administration since 2019 following financial difficulties that saw the club drop from La Liga to the third tier by 2023 before earning promotion back to Segunda División.
The club’s stadium, La Rosaleda, is set to host matches during the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a factor previously cited by Qatar Sports Investments as part of its exploratory interest in acquiring a stake in the Spanish side, according to reporting from March 2025.
At present, Abdullah Al-Thani retains ownership of 51 percent of Málaga CF, while Blue Bay holds the remaining 49 percent, a structure that has come under increasing scrutiny as judicial investigators examine the flow of funds between the club and associated companies.
The arrest order represents the most severe judicial action taken to date against the Al-Thani family in a case that has spanned multiple years and involved allegations of financial mismanagement that reportedly contributed to the club’s sporting and economic decline.
Spanish authorities have not yet confirmed whether the Al-Thani family members are currently within national territory or if international cooperation will be required to execute the detention order, which carries immediate enforceability under the court’s ruling.
