Mainz 05 Eliminated from European Competition by Racing Strasbourg

Mainz 05’s historic run in the UEFA Conference League ended Thursday night as the Bundesliga side surrendered a 2-0 first-leg advantage with a crushing 4-0 defeat at Racing Strasbourg, eliminating them from the competition.

The German club arrived at Stade de la Meinau needing only to avoid a three-goal deficit to advance to the semifinals for the first time in club history. Instead, Strasbourg scored four unanswered goals after halftime to complete a remarkable comeback and win the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

Mainz had taken control of the quarterfinal tie with a 2-0 victory at home a week earlier, but any hopes of progressing were extinguished early in the second half in France. Sebastian Nanasi opened the scoring for Strasbourg in the 26th minute, followed by Abdoul Ouattara just nine minutes later to level the aggregate score at 2-2.

The turning point came shortly after the break when Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz saved a penalty kick from Emmanuel Emegha in the 66th minute, preserving what remained of Mainz’s hopes. However, the save only delayed the inevitable as Julio Enciso restored Strasbourg’s lead in the 69th minute, and Emegha added his second goal five minutes later to seal the victory.

“We have no fear. We want to win the game, not just hold onto the result,” Batz had said before the match, calling the opportunity a “historical chance” for the club. Despite his penalty save and determined effort, Batz could not prevent the onslaught that saw Mainz concede four goals after the interval.

Strasbourg’s victory sets up a semifinal clash as they seek to turn into the first French club to reach the Conference League final. For Mainz, the defeat ends their European campaign and means they will refocus solely on Bundesliga proceedings for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

The result continues a trend of Bundesliga clubs struggling to make deep runs in the Conference League since its inception in 2021. No German team has yet reached the final of the competition, and Mainz’s exit leaves only one Bundesliga club still active in European competition this season.

Mainz head coach Urs Fischer acknowledged the challenge ahead after the first leg, stating his team would “do everything to ensure tomorrow is not the end.” Unfortunately for the Mainz faithful, Thursday night proved to be exactly that as their European dreams ended in Alsace.

The defeat means Mainz will now turn their attention to domestic league action, where they currently sit in mid-table contention. Their next Bundesliga fixture comes against Werder Bremen on April 20th as they look to rebuild momentum following the European exit.

For Strasbourg, the victory represents a significant achievement in their European campaign. The Ligue 1 side will now prepare for their semifinal matchup, knowing they have already surpassed expectations by reaching this stage of a European competition for the first time in over a decade.

As the Conference League progresses toward its final in Leipzig on May 27th, Strasbourg will carry the momentum of this remarkable comeback while Mainz reflects on what might have been after squandering a promising advantage.

What’s next for Mainz 05? The team returns to Bundesliga action on April 20th against Werder Bremen at the Opel Arena as they seek to refocus their season after this European disappointment.
