The Magdalena Department government is advancing its sports diversity initiative by promoting archery practice at the Polideportivo del Sur facility, providing opportunities for youth to engage in a sport less traditional to the region.
According to Jorge Lavalle, director of Indeportes Magdalena, approximately 40 young people currently practice disciplines including archery at the Polideportivo del Sur, made possible through institutional support that has opened spaces and opportunities for new generations.
Gerardo Figuera Puello, archery coach, emphasized that institutional backing has enabled children, teenagers, and young people across the department to access suitable facilities for training in a sport not commonly practiced locally.
The initiative builds on earlier investments in sports infrastructure, including the establishment of a High Performance Center, which has supported athletes in disciplines such as athletics where Magdalena has produced national and international competitors.
Recent regional competitions have yielded results for the department’s archery program, with athletes securing 19 medals in sub-18, sub-15, and sub-12 categories at an event held in Valledupar.
Figuera noted that the team recently achieved second place in that competition, highlighting progress in developing young talent through structured training at the Polideportivo del Sur.
The government frames archery as part of a broader strategy to diversify sports offerings beyond traditional strengths like athletics, aiming to provide youth with varied athletic pathways and foster inclusive participation.
Indeportes Magdalena continues to coordinate with local authorities to sustain and expand access to archery and other individual and collective sports at municipal facilities.
As the program develops, officials indicate ongoing efforts to prepare athletes for upcoming national youth competitions, though specific event dates and qualification details were not disclosed in verified sources.
The Polideportivo del Sur remains a central hub for these activities, serving as a venue where youth can train regularly under coach supervision with equipment and logistical support provided through departmental programs.
Looking ahead, the Magdalena Department plans to maintain its investment in sports diversity, with archery positioned as a growing discipline that complements existing athletic programs and contributes to holistic youth development through structured sport participation.
