Luis Enrique has made his stance clear regarding player management ahead of the 2026 World Cup: as head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, his focus remains solely on his club team, not international tournaments.
The Spanish manager addressed the topic during a pre-match press conference ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 trip to Angers, emphasizing that World Cup considerations do not influence his decisions on player rotation or playing time.
“Je suis entraîneur du PSG, le reste je m’en fous,” Enrique stated in French, which translates to “I am PSG coach, the rest I don’t care about.” His comments came three days before a highly anticipated Champions League semifinal first-leg clash against Bayern Munich.
When asked specifically about managing players’ physical load with the World Cup approaching, Enrique rejected the premise that his approach changes during busy periods.
“Non, c’est la même chose que la saison dernière,” he explained. “The only difference is that we had more of a lead over our pursuers last season and Lens is having an extraordinary season, but we have the same obligation to win. We are used to playing with this ambition.”
The PSG coach defended his recent handling of young goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, referencing past criticism he faced for defending the player earlier in the season.
“Quand vous avez critiqué Lucas Chevalier en première partie de saison, j’étais là pour le défendre. Maintenant vous voulez qu’il joue, tout va très vite, c’est incroyable. Je pense déjà avoir tout dit à ce sujet.”
Regarding midfielder Vitinha’s availability for the Bayern Munich tie, Enrique noted that nothing had changed since being asked the same question days earlier.
“Vous m’avez déjà posé la même question il y a trois jours. Rien n’a changé depuis.”
On whether PSG’s recent win over Nantes would lead to broader rotation against Angers, Enrique acknowledged the congested fixture list but maintained the team’s enthusiasm for the challenge.
“Nous avons un enchaînement compliqué parce qu’il y a beaucoup de matchs, mais on adore ce calendrier….”
Enrique, who has led PSG since 2023, previously managed the Spanish national team and Barcelona, where he won multiple trophies including the UEFA Champions League in 2015. His playing career featured stints at Sporting Gijón, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, earning over 60 caps for Spain.
The 55-year-old coach was recently honored as Onze Mondial’s Manager of the Season for the 2024-2025 campaign, recognized for implementing a philosophy that contributed to PSG’s historic domestic performance.
As PSG navigates a critical phase of their season with Champions League semifinals on the horizon, Enrique’s message remains consistent: his priority is preparing his club team for immediate challenges, not speculating about future international tournaments.
PSG’s next match is the away Ligue 1 fixture against Angers, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Local time. Following that, they face Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Parc des Princes.
What does this imply for PSG’s approach in the coming weeks? Expect Enrique to continue prioritizing match readiness and squad cohesion over external tournaments, maintaining his established method of managing player minutes based solely on PSG’s competitive needs.
