Locoal-Mendon: Traditional Bowmaker Patrick Camenen Showcases Craftsmanship
In the picturesque commune of Locoal-Mendon in Brittany’s Morbihan department, master bowyer Patrick Camenen is presenting an exhibition of his traditionally inspired bows throughout April 2026 at the local médiathèque.
The exhibition, running from April 4 to April 30, 2026, features Camenen’s handcrafted bows from his workshop, L’Archerie de la Ria, alongside photographs from regional archery clubs in Auray, Landaul, and Kervignac.
Camenen, recognized as one of France’s few remaining traditional bowyers, has operated his workshop in Locoal-Mendon for 14 years, creating custom bows that blend historical inspiration with modern techniques. His materials include dense hardwoods like ebony and mahogany for grips, European woods such as boxwood and walnut, and flexible bamboo for the limbs, combined with traditional “bow woods” like yew and osage orange.
A special workshop for children to make mini-bows is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the médiathèque, open to participants aged six and older. On Saturday, April 18, 2026, Camenen will meet with local archery clubs from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by the exhibition’s vernissage at 11:45 AM.
The médiathèque is located at Le Courtil in Locoal-Mendon, with the postal code 56550. Visitors can contact Camenen directly via email at patrick.camenen@wanadoo.fr or by phone at 02 97 56 87 14, preferably during meal times as noted by the artisan.
This exhibition highlights the enduring appeal of traditional archery craftsmanship in an era dominated by mass-produced equipment, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the artistry and technical skill involved in creating each unique bow.
For those interested in following Camenen’s work or inquiring about custom bow commissions, direct contact through his established channels remains the best approach, as he continues to operate his workshop in Locoal-Mendon, serving clients across France and beyond.
