Ligue 1 Referee Recommends Overturning Red Card in Nantes-Brest Match
Referee Guillaume Paradis has advised the French Football Federation’s disciplinary committee to rescind the red card shown to Brest midfielder Dehmaine Tabibou during the Ligue 1 match against Nantes on April 6, 2024.
The incident occurred in the 78th minute when Tabibou was dismissed for a challenge on Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed. Paradis, who officiated the 2-1 Nantes victory at the Stade de la Beaujoire, stated in his post-match report that the challenge did not meet the threshold for violent conduct under Ligue 1’s disciplinary regulations.
According to the French Football Federation (FFF), Paradis submitted his recommendation following a review of match footage. The FFF’s disciplinary committee will now consider the advice when determining whether to uphold or overturn the sanction. Tabibou currently serves a one-match suspension pending the committee’s decision.
Brest head coach Eric Roy welcomed the referee’s stance, calling the initial red card “harsh” and expressing confidence that the sanction will be lifted. Nantes coach Antoine Kombouare declined to comment on the referee’s recommendation, focusing instead on his team’s preparation for the upcoming fixture against Lyon.
The recommendation highlights ongoing discussions about refereeing consistency in Ligue 1, particularly regarding challenges that borderline violent conduct. Ligue 1 has emphasized referee accountability this season, with officials encouraged to submit detailed post-match reports when they believe sanctions may have been excessive.
Tabibou, a 23-year-old defensive midfielder, has made 28 appearances for Brest this season, contributing two goals and three assists. His absence has forced Brest to adjust their midfield setup, with coach Roy turning to alternatives such as Hugo Magnetti and Romain Faivre in recent matches.
As of the latest standings, Brest sit 10th in Ligue 1 with 38 points, while Nantes occupy 15th place with 31 points. The disciplinary committee’s decision is expected within the next 7-10 days, which could impact Brest’s availability for their match against Monaco on April 20, 2024.
