International Talent Converges for Liepāja Open Boxing Championship
Liepāja, Latvia, recently solidified its standing as a regional hub for combat sports, hosting the Liepājas atklātais čempionāts boksā (Liepāja Open Boxing Championship). The event, which took place on May 24 and 25, drew approximately 100 boxers from across Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, creating a high-stakes environment for athletes looking to prove their dominance in the Baltic region.
The tournament was a collaborative effort, organized by the Liepājas Kompleksā sporta skola (LKSS) and the “Olymp sports” boxing club. The scale of the event was made possible through the support of sponsors Gints Ķuņķis of “KG Metal” and Artūrs Kaļiņins, ensuring the competition met a high professional standard.
Top Honors and Standout Performances
While the tournament featured a wide array of talent, the Olaines “Olymp” boxing club emerged as the overall best team of the competition. Individual accolades highlighted both raw power and technical proficiency, with Dāvis Petrovs from Saldus earning the title of the tournament’s best boxer.

Technical mastery was also recognized, with Nikijs Kurpnieks named the most technical boxer of the event. In a poignant moment of recognition, the Imanta Enkūža memorial award was presented to LKSS boxer Bogdans Proņins, who secured the honor after a convincing victory over an opponent from Riga in the final.
For those unfamiliar with the regional circuit, these memorial and technical awards often carry as much weight among coaches as the medals themselves, signaling a fighter’s readiness for higher-level international competition.
Local Triumph: Liepāja’s Champions
The host city saw significant success, with several local athletes climbing to the top of the podium. The following boxers were crowned Liepāja champions during the event:
- Bogdans Proņins (LKSS)
- Kristers Muzikants (LKSS)
- Akeksandrs Išutkins (LKSS)
- Alekss Šmits Kuļpekša (LKSS)
- Ņikita Tarasovs (“Olymp sports”)
The success of these athletes reflects the depth of the boxing program in Liepāja, where multiple clubs—including LKSS, “Olymp sports,” and “CF-LIEPĀJA”—work to develop talent across various age groups and weight classes.
A Strong 2026 Season for Liepāja Boxing
The Open Championship is part of a broader, successful run for Liepāja’s boxing community in 2026. Earlier in the year, from March 26 to 29, the city hosted the Latvian Championship (LČ) for U19 and Elite boxers. That event saw over 150 participants and yielded impressive results for local fighters.
During the March championships, Liepāja’s representatives—including seven from LKSS and individuals from “CF-Liepāja” and “Olymp Sports”—secured a variety of medals. Notable results included first-place finishes for Bogdans Proņins (LKSS) and Aleksejs Orlovs (CF-Liepāja), as well as silver medals for Kristians Andersons and Markuss Reke of LKSS.
The coaching staff behind these results includes Raitis Mičulis, Ņikita Androščuks, Kaspars Pīrāgs, Nikolajs Janovičs, Jegors Mamaševs, and Artjoms Averčenko. This collaborative coaching approach has been credited with the city’s recent surge in podium finishes.
Looking Ahead: The Road to Palanga
As the current season approaches its conclusion, the momentum for Liepāja’s boxers remains high. The next major checkpoint for these athletes will be an international tournament in Palanga, Lithuania, scheduled for June 10 through 13.
This upcoming trip to Palanga will serve as a critical test for the local fighters to apply the lessons learned from the Liepāja Open and the Latvian Championships on foreign soil.
