Colombian professional cyclist Cristian Muñoz has died at the age of 31 following complications from a knee injury sustained during a crash at the Tour du Jura in France, his team Nu Colombia confirmed on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Muñoz suffered a left knee injury in a fall during the Tour du Jura stage race on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Despite receiving initial treatment in France with antibiotics and stitches for the wound, his condition worsened during travel to Spain where he was set to join his team for the Tour des Asturies.
According to team director Raul Mesa, Muñoz’s leg continued to swell after the initial medical care in France, leading to his admission to a hospital in Oviedo, Spain. Medical staff there identified a difficult-to-treat infection that had developed from the knee injury.
Despite intensive care treatment, Muñoz’s health deteriorated rapidly in the final hours before his death. “In the last hours, his condition worsened and despite all the efforts of the medical team, Cristian passed away Friday morning,” Mesa stated in the team’s official announcement.
The Colombian Cycling Federation confirmed the tragedy through its official social media channels, expressing sorrow over the loss of the young athlete who had recently competed in the Tour de Guatemala in November 2025.
Nu Colombia subsequently withdrew from the Tour des Asturies, which was underway at the time of Muñoz’s passing, as a mark of respect for their rider.
Muñoz, a 31-year-old rider from Colombia, had been building his career in European racing circuits, with recent participation in Latin American events prior to his spring 2026 campaign in France.
The incident highlights the risks associated with even seemingly minor injuries in professional cycling, where infections can escalate quickly despite prompt medical attention.
