D’Andreis Claims Italian Junior A2 Title; Judo Club Sakura Osimo Secures Multiple A1 Final Berths
In a dominant display of skill and endurance, Luca D’Andreis has been crowned the Italian Junior A2 Champion, leading a wave of success for Judo Club Sakura Osimo ASD at the FIJLKAM national finals. The club’s athletes delivered standout performances across two different cities and age categories, securing critical qualifications for the upcoming A1 finals.
The pinnacle of the weekend came in Bari, where D’Andreis competed in the Juniores U21 category. Fighting in the 66 kg weight class, the first-degree black belt displayed a masterclass in consistency, winning all seven of his matches. In a competitive field of 77 registered athletes, D’Andreis navigated through more experienced opponents to claim the gold medal, cementing his status as one of the top prospects in the division.
Cadetti Success in Leini
While D’Andreis took the spotlight in Bari, the club’s Cadetti U18 squad was making its mark in Leini, Piedmont, during the weekend of March 21 and 22. The competition was fierce, particularly in the 66 kg category, where Mattia Costantini faced a massive field of 103 participants.
Costantini, too a first-degree black belt, fought his way to the final after winning six consecutive matches. Though he narrowly missed the top spot, he secured a prestigious silver medal, ensuring his progression to the A1 finals.
Adding to the club’s momentum, Massimo Olaru delivered a strong performance in the 90 kg category. The blue belt athlete recorded three victories to finish fifth overall. This placement is a significant milestone for Olaru, as it grants him a qualification spot for the A1 finals alongside Costantini and D’Andreis.
Depth of Talent and Team Effort
The success of the club extended beyond the podium. Diamante Sofia Baffetti competed in the 57 kg category, where she proved her capability early on by winning her first three matches. Baffetti ultimately finished ninth in a field of 62 competitors, showcasing the depth of talent within the Sakura Osimo program.
The club was also represented by Gabriele Racioppa, Pietro Galanti and Enrico Frontini. While they did not reach the final rankings, their participation highlighted the club’s commitment to developing athletes across multiple weight classes and experience levels.
The Philosophy of Sakura Osimo
Based in Osimo, the Judo Club Sakura Osimo draws its identity from the Japanese word for “cherry blossom.” According to the club, the name symbolizes the beauty and purity of the sport. This philosophy of building solid foundations is evident in the recent results, where athletes ranging from blue belts to first-degree black belts have achieved national-level success.
For those following the club’s progress, the organization maintains an active presence on Instagram and Facebook to connect practitioners and supporters outside the dojo.
Path to the A1 Finals
The current results mark a turning point in the season. With three athletes—D’Andreis, Costantini, and Olaru—now qualified for the A1 finals, the club moves into the highest tier of national competition. This transition represents a significant step up in difficulty, as the A1 finals typically feature the elite tier of the FIJLKAM circuit.
The transition from A2 to A1 is often the steepest curve for young judokas, requiring not only technical precision but a higher level of tactical maturity. Given the win-loss records from the Leini and Bari events, the Sakura Osimo trio enters the next phase with significant momentum.
The club will now focus on preparation for the A1 finals, where they aim to convert these qualifications into further national medals.
