A humanoid robot named Lightning has shattered the human half-marathon world record in Beijing, completing the 13.1-mile (21-kilometer) course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds on April 19, 2026.
The achievement marks the first time a robot has surpassed the fastest human time for the distance, besting the current world record of 57 minutes and 31 seconds set by Ethiopian runner Jacob Kiplimo in 2021.
Developed by Chinese smartphone company Honor, Lightning competed in the second Beijing E-Town Robot Half Marathon, a parallel event held alongside human runners but on a separate course to ensure safety.
Dozens of robots participated in the race, testing real-world capabilities in balance, endurance, and navigation. While some operated autonomously, others were remotely controlled by engineers during the event.
Lightning’s time of 50:26 represents a significant leap from last year’s competition, when most robots struggled to complete the course. This year’s event demonstrated marked progress in robotic mobility and stability.
Du Xiaodi, a development engineer at Honor, highlighted the broader implications of the technology.”Looking ahead, some of these technologies might be transferred to other areas,” Du said. “It’s similar to how the automotive industry initially developed through competitions.”
The race was not without challenges. Several robots stumbled or veered off course during the event, and one suffered a catastrophic failure, breaking apart after a fall and requiring removal on a stretcher.
Despite the mishaps, spectators expressed enthusiasm about the milestone.”I’m very excited,” said Sun Zhigang, a Beijing resident. “First of all, it’s the first time robots have surpassed humans, and that’s something I never imagined.”
Jiang Liangzhi, another observer, added: “Their performance is quite impressive,” reflecting growing public interest in the integration of robotics into physical endurance challenges.
The Beijing E-Town Robot Half Marathon has become an annual showcase for advancements in humanoid robotics, drawing engineers and technologists from across China and beyond.
Honor’s Lightning robot, named for its speed and agility, has now become a symbol of China’s rapid progress in robotics and artificial intelligence, particularly in applications requiring dynamic movement and environmental adaptation.
