Honduras Wins Silver in Archery and Secures Two Spots for 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games

Honduras Wins Silver in Archery, Secures Two Quotas for 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games

Honduran archer Jessica Velásquez captured the silver medal in the women’s recurve individual event at the Grand Prix of the Americas archery competition held in El Salvador, securing Honduras’ qualification for two quota places at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.

The competition took place at the Archery Range of the Merliot Sports Complex in Ciudad Merliot, El Salvador, from April 17-20, 2026, as part of the Grand Prix of the Americas series. Velásquez advanced through the rounds to reach the gold medal match, where she was defeated by the representative from Martinique in a closely contested final.

In the men’s recurve division, Honduran archer Elvin Nájera demonstrated strong performance by reaching the bronze medal match against Guyana. The match ended in a 4-4 tie in sets, leading to a shoot-off where Nájera ultimately placed fourth after the arrow shoot-off.

Despite not earning an individual medal in the men’s category, the combined results from both Velásquez and Nájera’s performances secured Honduras two quota places for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Honduran archery as the country prepares for the regional multi-sport event scheduled for mid-2026 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Velásquez also led Honduras’ national ranking in women’s recurve archery for the 2025 season, contributing to her consistent performance throughout the competition. Her silver medal result added valuable points to her regional standing and confirmed her competitive growth ahead of the 2026 Games cycle.

The Honduran delegation’s participation in the Grand Prix of the Americas was supported by the Honduran Olympic Committee (COH) and the National Archery Federation of Honduras (FENTA), which highlighted the importance of the result for the country’s archery development program.

With the quota places now secured, Honduras can focus on finalizing its athlete selection and preparation for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, where archery competitions will be held at the Parque del Este in Santo Domingo Este.

The achievement represents Honduras’ continued investment in archery as a developing sport within the nation’s Olympic program, building on previous regional competition experience to enhance competitiveness for future continental events.

As Honduras looks toward the 2026 Games, the archery team will continue its training regimen and participate in upcoming qualifying events to maximize its chances of medal contention in Santo Domingo.

The Central American and Caribbean Games, scheduled for June 28 to July 13, 2026, in Santo Domingo, will feature archery as one of the 38 sports on the program, providing Honduras with an opportunity to showcase its archery talent on the regional stage.
