He Joins Mu Zuoyun, Zheng Haixia, Yao Ming, and Miao Liejie as the Fifth Chinese Basketball Inductee into the FIBA Hall of Fame

BERLIN, Germany – Chinese basketball legend Wang Zhizhi was officially inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame on April 21, 2026, becoming the fifth person from China to receive the sport’s highest international honor.

The ceremony, held in Berlin, recognized Wang’s decades-long career as a trailblazer for Chinese basketball on the global stage. He joins Mu Tiezhu (2019), Zheng Haixia (2021), Yao Ming (2023), and Miao Lijie (2024) as the only Chinese individuals enshrined in the hall.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from FIBA,” Wang said during his acceptance speech. “This honor belongs not just to me, but to Chinese basketball and everyone who has supported its development.”

Wang made history in 2001 as the first Chinese player to sign with an NBA team, joining the Dallas Mavericks. He later played for the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat, paving the way for future generations of Chinese athletes in North American professional basketball.

On the international stage, Wang represented China in multiple Olympic Games and FIBA competitions. He helped the national team achieve eighth-place finishes at both the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also led China to four Asian Championships and three Asian Games gold medals.

One of the most iconic moments of his career came at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, where Wang scored 20 points in the final to help China win the gold medal. After the victory, his teammates hung all of their gold medals around his neck in a gesture of respect that became a lasting image in Chinese sports history.

Domestically, Wang was a cornerstone of the Bayi Rockets, helping the team win seven CBA championships. He retired as the league’s all-time leader in blocked shots, a record that still stands.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis highlighted Wang’s impact during the ceremony, referencing the 2010 Asian Games moment as emblematic of his leadership and significance to the sport.

Wang’s induction underscores the growing influence of Chinese basketball in international competition. His career bridged eras, from laying the foundation for China’s rise in Asian basketball to inspiring a new generation of players aiming for global success.

The 2026 FIBA Hall of Fame class also included international stars such as Sue Bird (United States), Dirk Nowitzki (Germany), Céline Dumerc (France), Clarisse Machanguana (Mozambique), and Hedo Türkoğlu (Turkey), along with Polish coach Ludwik Mętrak-Mikołajewicz, who was inducted for his contributions to the game.

As Chinese basketball continues to develop its youth programs and expand its presence in global tournaments, Wang Zhizhi’s enshrinement serves as both a milestone and a motivation for future athletes.
