Home Turf Triumph: Jeremías Fernández Claims Gold at Judo National Apertura in San Juan
In a display of precision and dominance, Jeremías Fernández captured the gold medal at the Campeonato Nacional Apertura de Judo, securing the title of Argentine champion on his home soil in San Juan. The victory came during a high-stakes weekend at the Estadio Aldo Cantoni, where Fernández navigated a challenging field in one of the tournament’s most competitive divisions.
The event, which took place from April 10 to 12, 2026, transformed San Juan into the epicenter of Argentine judo. More than 1,500 competitors from across the country converged on the province for the competition, which stands as a cornerstone of the sport’s national calendar. The tournament was organized by the Federación Sanjuanina de Judo in coordination with the Government of San Juan through the Secretaría de Deporte.
A Masterclass in the Senior Division
Competing in the Senior category (Mayores) for athletes over 21 years old in the up to 90 kg weight class, Fernández entered the tournament as a seeded athlete due to his ranking. This status granted him a direct path to the quarterfinals, bypassing the early preliminary rounds.
Fernández’s path to the podium was marked by efficiency. In his opening quarterfinal bout, he faced an opponent from Buenos Aires, ending the contest in just 30 seconds. Fernández secured the victory via Ippon—the highest possible score in judo—effectively ending the match instantly.
The semifinal presented a more grueling challenge against a competitor from Mendoza. The bout lasted approximately two minutes, with Fernández maintaining an aggressive offensive. Holding a lead with a waza-ari and a yuko, Fernández continued to pressure his opponent. The match concluded when the Mendoza athlete received a third penalty (amonestación) for lack of activity, resulting in an automatic disqualification and propelling Fernández into the final.
For those unfamiliar with the scoring, judo rewards the quality of the throw and the control of the opponent. An Ippon is a decisive victory, while waza-ari and yuko represent partial scores that can lead to a win if the opponent cannot respond or if they accumulate too many penalties.
San Juan’s Growing Judo Influence
The success of Jeremías Fernández served as a highlight for the local delegation. The Federación Sanjuanina de Judo entered 70 competitors into the event, reflecting the steady growth and development of the discipline within the province.
The tournament followed a rigorous three-day schedule to accommodate various age groups and skill levels:
- Friday: Focused on the youth pipeline, featuring the Juveniles Sub 13, Cadetes Sub 18, and Juniors Sub 21 categories.
- Saturday: Featured the Juveniles Sub 15 and the elite Seniors (black belts). The day included an official inaugural ceremony at 16:00, followed by the high-profile Senior finals starting at 17:00.
- Sunday: Dedicated to the Kyus, encompassing both novice practitioners and graduated adults.
All categories were contested in both female and male branches, with strict adherence to weight divisions to ensure fair competition.
Looking Ahead: The Road to the Clausura
The Argentine national judo circuit is divided into two primary tournaments per year: the Apertura (Opening) and the Clausura (Closing). By securing the gold in the Apertura, Fernández has established himself as the man to beat heading into the second half of the season.
The victory at the Estadio Aldo Cantoni not only provides Fernández with a national title but similarly reinforces the competitive standing of San Juan’s athletic programs on the national stage.
The next major checkpoint for the athletes will be the Clausura tournament, where the season’s final rankings and overall championships will be determined.
