Franz Wagner delivers clutch performance as Orlando Magic capture 2-1 lead over Detroit Pistons
ORLANDO, Florida — Franz Wagner seized the moment in the Orlando Magic’s 113-105 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 3 of the NBA Playoffs first round, delivering the poise and precision that turned a precarious situation into a commanding 2-1 series lead for the underdog Floridians.
The German forward, a former FIBA World Cup and EuroBasket champion, remained unfazed when the Magic surrendered a 17-point lead late in the third quarter. With Orlando trailing by two points and less than two minutes remaining in the period, Wagner demanded the ball in crunch time and responded with a mid-range jumper followed by a timely three-pointer to restore the lead.
“That was a massive moment,” Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley said, using Wagner’s own words to describe the sequence that proved decisive. The victory improved Orlando’s record in the best-of-seven series to 2-1 against the Pistons, who entered the playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s top seed during the regular season.
Wagner finished with 17 points in 33 minutes of action, continuing his steady progression toward peak form after a prolonged ankle injury limited his availability earlier in the season. His older brother Moritz Wagner did not play in the contest, while Tristan da Silva saw eight minutes of action off the bench without scoring.
The Magic’s offensive output was paced by Desmond Bane and Paolo Banchero, who each contributed 25 points. Banchero sealed the win with a late three-pointer to make it 113-105, capping a fourth-quarter surge that erased a Pistons lead established just minutes earlier.
Detroit, which had led by as many as 17 points earlier in the game, saw their advantage dissolve in the final minutes. Pistons star Cade Cunningham scored 27 points and briefly set Detroit ahead with twelve points in the closing stretch, but Wagner’s back-to-back baskets swung momentum decisively in Orlando’s favor.
“We’ve got to stay focused, cut down on mistakes,” Wagner said. “If we keep doing that, we’ll hopefully get to four wins soon. But if we start looking too far ahead, we lose the focus we demand.”
The Magic will look to close out the series when they host Game 4 on Tuesday at 2:00 a.m. CEST, continuing their home-court advantage in the series.
Orlando’s playoff appearance marks their first postseason series win since 2010, adding historical significance to their current run against a Detroit squad that earned the league’s best record in the East during the 2025-26 regular season.
The performance underscores Wagner’s growing role as a leader for a young Magic core aiming to validate their status as more than just a fleeting surprise in this year’s playoffs.
