Badminton, Stiglich Eliminated in Huelva Opens as Italy’s European Campaign Ends
Gianna Stiglich’s individual European Championship campaign ended in the round of 32 after a straight-sets defeat to Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova, marking the conclusion of Italy’s participation in the 2026 edition of the continental individual event.
The match, played at the Palacio de Deportes Carolina Marin in Huelva, Spain, saw Stiglich — who received a first-round bye — fall 21-12, 21-10 to the sixth-seeded Buhrova in 31 minutes. The Ukrainian dominated from the outset, taking control early in both games to secure a comfortable victory.
In the opening set, Buhrova built a steady lead, closing out the frame 21-12 in 16 minutes. She carried that momentum into the second, jumping to an 8-2 advantage before wrapping up the match 21-10 in just 15 minutes.
Stiglich’s exit means Italy has no remaining competitors in the individual draws. Earlier in the tournament, Yasmine Hamza lost in the round of 64 to Slovenia’s Anja Blazina, while the women’s doubles pair of Martina Corsini and Emma Piccinin were defeated in their opening match by Britain’s Lisa Curtin and Sian Kelly. In men’s singles, Giovanni Toti and Fabio Caponio both exited in the second round.
The Palacio de Deportes Carolina Marin, a multi-purpose arena named after Olympic champion Carolina Marín, has hosted major badminton events including prior European Championships and international opens. Its location in Huelva, in southwestern Spain, places it within the Andalusia region, approximately 100 kilometers west of Seville.
With Stiglich’s loss, Italy’s campaign at the 2026 European Individual Badminton Championships comes to a close. The nation will now shift focus to upcoming team events and preparation for the next continental cycle.
