LDODK’s dream of reaching the Korfball League final in Ahoy was shattered in agonizing fashion on Tuesday night, as a late surge by visiting DVO turned a seemingly secure lead into a 23-22 defeat in Gorredijk. The loss means the Friesian club will not appear in the championship showdown for the fifth consecutive season, despite reaching the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

Playing at home in the Koartsweagen hall, LDODK appeared in control for much of the contest, building a four-point advantage by halftime and extending it to 22-18 with just over four minutes remaining. However, DVO responded with an explosive final sequence, scoring five unanswered points to snatch victory and secure their third-ever appearance in the Korfball League final.

The turning point came in the dying moments when DVO’s Gertjan Meerkerk scored what proved to be the winning goal with seconds left on the clock. “We did everything right for 90 percent of the game, but that last 10 percent cost us,” said assistant coach Friso Boode, who was overseeing the team in the absence of suspended head coach Jan Niebeek. “It’s unbelievable how close we were. We work so hard all year, only to supply it away again.”

The defeat continues LDODK’s painful trend in semifinal play, where they have now lost four consecutive years despite reaching this stage repeatedly. For DVO, the victory represents a significant milestone, marking their third final appearance in club history and setting up a championship match against the winner of the other semifinal.
