The cycling world mourns the loss of Cristian Camilo Muñoz, the 30-year-old Colombian professional rider who died on Friday, April 24, 2026, following medical complications from a crash during the Tour du Jura one-day race in France six days earlier.
Muñoz, who rode for UAE Team Emirates between 2019 and 2021, was competing for Nu Colombia in the French race when he crashed and sustained an injury to his left knee. Although he initially received treatment at a medical center after the incident, his condition worsened after traveling with his team to Spain for another race, where he was admitted to hospital.
According to the Colombian Cycling Federation and Nu Colombia team statements released on Friday, Muñoz developed a “difficult-to-treat” infection in his knee following the crash. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated and he passed away on Friday morning.
The Colombian Cycling Federation said in its statement: “His passing leaves a huge void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing the road and races with him. Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline, and character both on and off the bike.”
Nu Colombia’s team echoed the sentiment: “Today we say goodbye to Cristian Munoz, a cyclist who turned every kilometre into a testament to passion, discipline and heart. His story does not end here, and it reminds us that dreams are pedalled every day, even when the road gets tough.”
Muñoz began his World Tour career with UAE Team Emirates in 2019, riding alongside notable teammates such as Tadej Pogacar and Brandon McNulty before moving to Colombian team EPM-Scott in 2021. Prior to his time with UAE, he won a stage of the under-23 Giro d’Italia in 2018 and came fourth in the 2024 Colombian Road Race Championships.
His teammates from Nu Colombia subsequently withdrew from the Vuelta Asturias Julio Alvarez Mendo stage scheduled for Friday as a mark of respect.
The incident has renewed discussions about safety in road racing, following other recent fatalities in the sport, including Switzerland’s Muriel Furrer, who died after a crash at the 2024 Road World Championships women’s junior race, and Gino Mader, who passed away following a high-speed descent crash during the 2023 Tour de Suisse.
As of Friday morning, no further details about funeral arrangements or memorial events have been released by Muñoz’s family, team, or the Colombian Cycling Federation.
