Cuban Elite League Returns Amid Economic Crisis and Power Outages
The Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation (FCBS) has announced the return of the IV Elite League of Cuban Baseball, set to begin on May 2, 2026, and run through July 10, despite the country facing one of its most severe economic and energy crises in recent years.
The league will feature the same six teams that participated in the previous 64th National Series: Las Tunas, Matanzas, Industriales, Mayabeque, Artemisa, and Holguín. According to the FCBS statement published on the JIT website, the tournament will proceed amid ongoing challenges stemming from the U.S. Economic, commercial, and financial blockade, as well as what Cuban officials describe as an “energy siege” affecting the island.
Qualifying play will run from May 2 to June 19, with each team playing 40 games in four-game subseries, all scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. Local time. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals, held from June 21 to June 30 in a best-of-seven format. The final series will take place from July 2 to July 10, similarly in a best-of-seven format.
The announcement acknowledges the difficult reality on the ground, where prolonged blackouts have disrupted daily life and sports activities. During the 64th National Series, power outages reached up to 20 hours per day in some areas, with an electrical deficit peaking at 1,969 megawatts. Despite these conditions, the FCBS emphasized baseball’s role in maintaining national morale, stating that the sport “returns to the stadiums, into households, and to the feeling of every Cuban.”
The Elite League was first launched in 2022 as Cuba’s premier baseball competition, designed to elevate the standard of play by featuring the top teams from the National Series. Initially structured as a winter league, it shifted to a summer schedule beginning with the 2025 season, aligning the National Series to a winter calendar. This change aims to enhance player retention and improve the quality of competition by concentrating talent during a single peak season.
Over its short history, the league has served as a pathway for Cuban players to represent the country internationally. The winner of the 2022–23 Elite League, Agricultores, earned the right to compete at the 2023 Caribbean Series in Venezuela. However, subsequent editions have faced complications related to the Cuban national team’s participation in events like the World Baseball Classic, which affected Caribbean Series invitations in later years.
The league operates under the oversight of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER), with Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo serving as its president. Games are broadcast nationally on Tele Rebelde and internationally via Cubavision International, ensuring broad access despite infrastructural limitations.
As the May 2 opening date approaches, the league stands as a symbol of resilience for Cuban baseball fans. While the tournament will proceed under constrained conditions, its continuation reflects the enduring cultural significance of the sport on the island, even amid widespread hardship.
The next confirmed checkpoint is the opening game of the IV Elite League on May 2, 2026, featuring one of the six qualifying teams. Updates on match results, standings, and player performances will be available through official FCBS channels and national broadcasters.
What does this mean for Cuban baseball moving forward? For now, the focus remains on completing the tournament as scheduled. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the league adapts to ongoing challenges and whether it can maintain competitive integrity under difficult circumstances.
