Baseball Bat and Narcotics: Marseille ‘Ubershit’ Couple Arrested
In a case where sports equipment was used for something far removed from the diamond, a couple operating as “Ubershit” delivery drivers was intercepted by police in Marseille, France, on Tuesday evening. The operation, which took place in the city’s 5th arrondissement, ended with the seizure of narcotics and a baseball bat.
The arrest occurred around 10:30 p.m. On April 7, 2026, on Rue d’Alger. Officers from the Groupe de sécurité de proximité (GSP) spotted the couple parked near the entrance of a parking garage. According to reports, the officers were immediately alerted by a strong, pervasive smell of cannabis resin emanating from the vehicle’s interior during an identity check.
Although the scent of narcotics provided the initial lead, a specific piece of sports gear caught the attention of the GSP officers. A baseball bat was discovered lying at the feet of the passenger. The bat was found alongside a sports bag, which police quickly determined was not being used for athletic gear.
Upon searching the sports bag, authorities discovered a quantity of narcotics, including cannabis and cocaine, as well as a significant amount of cash. The presence of the money suggested the couple had been engaged in multiple transactions throughout the evening.
The term “Ubershit” refers to a modern method of drug distribution that mimics the logistics of ride-sharing and food delivery apps, allowing dealers to transport illicit substances quickly across urban areas. In this instance, the couple used a vehicle and a sports bag to facilitate their delivery network.
This incident occurs amidst a broader crackdown on narcotics in the region. On March 27, 2026, Marseille’s anti-drug office dismantled one of France’s most significant trafficking networks based in the Cité des Oliviers A in the 13th arrondissement. That larger operation resulted in 18 arrests and the disruption of a supply chain that fed various neighborhoods in Marseille as well as cities along the Côte d’Azur, including Nice, Grasse, Menton, and Fréjus.
While the “Ubershit” couple’s operation appears smaller in scale than the professionalized “criminal SME” structures seen in the 13th arrondissement—which employed dedicated managers, lookouts, and subcontractors—the employ of a baseball bat indicates a level of readiness for violence often associated with street-level distribution.
The couple remains under investigation as authorities process the seized cash and narcotics. No further details regarding the identities of the suspects or the exact volume of the seized drugs have been released.
The next confirmed step in the legal process will be the official filing of charges following the conclusion of their police custody.
