Chelsea have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior after a damaging run of form that saw the team suffer five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a goal.
The club confirmed Rosenior’s departure on Wednesday, less than four months into a five-and-a-half-year contract that was set to run until June 2032. His dismissal follows Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, which marked the fifth straight league loss in which Chelsea failed to find the net.
“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season,” a Chelsea statement read.
Rosenior, 41, was appointed head coach on 6 January 2026 to replace Enzo Maresca. Prior to joining Chelsea, he had served as head coach of Strasbourg in Ligue 1 since July 2024. His managerial career also included interim stints at Derby County in 2022 and a spell in charge of Hull City from November 2022 to May 2024.
As a player, Rosenior made over 390 senior appearances, playing as a right-back for clubs including Fulham, Reading, Hull City, and Brighton & Hove Albion. He earned caps for England at under-20 and under-21 levels.
The five-game losing streak represents Chelsea’s worst run since 1912, the same year the Titanic sank. During that span, the team conceded multiple goals in each match while failing to score once.
Following the defeat at Brighton, Rosenior criticised both himself and the players in post-match interviews, acknowledging the severity of the downturn in form.
Chelsea have named Calum McFarlane as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. McFarlane, a current first-team assistant, previously took charge after Maresca’s departure on Modern Year’s Day and oversaw the 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The club stated that a permanent replacement will be sought in the summer, when there will be a stronger market for candidates. Rosenior’s departure makes him the fifth full-time head coach under Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership group, which took control of the club in 2022.
Chelsea’s upcoming FA Cup semifinal at Wembley Stadium, scheduled for Saturday, will be McFarlane’s first match in charge. The team is set to face Manchester United in the last four of the competition.
The Blues remain in contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League, though the recent slide has intensified pressure on the squad to regain consistency in the final weeks of the season.
As Chelsea glance to steady the ship under interim leadership, the focus will shift to restoring offensive cohesion and defensive resilience ahead of a congested fixture list.
The club will provide further updates on the managerial search process in due course. For now, all attention turns to the FA Cup semifinal and the immediate challenge of ending the winless run.
What’s next: Chelsea face Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, April 25, 2026, kickoff at 3:00 PM BST (2:00 PM UTC).
