Düsseldorf loses again under new coach as Dresden fans celebrate peaceful return
Fortuna Düsseldorf’s hopes for a quick turnaround under new head coach Daniel Thioune were dashed on Matchday 30 of the 2. Bundesliga as they fell 2-0 to Holstein Kiel at the Merkur Spiel-Arena on April 20, 2024. The loss leaves Düsseldorf languishing in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone, although Holstein Kiel’s victory propelled them into automatic promotion contention with 58 points.
Meanwhile, Dynamo Dresden celebrated a 1-0 home victory over Erzgebirge Aue in the first match following fan disturbances that marred their previous encounter with Hertha BSC. The Saxony club’s supporters maintained a peaceful atmosphere throughout the 90 minutes at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, a stark contrast to the pitch invasions and clashes that led to the game’s abandonment in February.
Thioune, who took over from Friedhelm Funkel in March after Düsseldorf’s winless streak extended to six games, has yet to secure a win in his first three matches in charge. Holstein Kiel’s goals came from Steven Skrzybski in the 28th minute and Lewis Holtby in the 72nd minute, exposing Düsseldorf’s defensive frailties despite the coaching change.
“We’re not getting the results we need right now,” Thioune said in his post-match press conference. “The players are trying, but we’re making too many individual errors at critical moments. It’s frustrating, but we have to keep working.”
In Dresden, the focus shifted from the pitch to the stands, where club officials and local authorities praised the fans’ conduct. “The atmosphere was exactly what we wanted to see – passionate but respectful,” said Dynamo Dresden sporting director Ralf Minge. “This is how football should be enjoyed in our city.”
The peaceful return was particularly significant given the February 17 match against Hertha BSC, which was abandoned after 68 minutes when Dresden fans invaded the pitch and clashed with police, resulting in over 20 injuries and multiple arrests. That incident led to a DFB fine of 50,000 euros and a partial stadium closure for the club’s next home game.
Holstein Kiel’s win over Düsseldorf was their third consecutive victory, boosting their goal difference to +25 and solidifying their position in the top two. Düsseldorf, meanwhile, have won just two of their last ten matches and remain deeply involved in the relegation battle, with only three games left in the season.
Looking ahead, Düsseldorf face SV Sandhausen at home on April 27, while Dresden travel to face VfL Osnabrück on the same day. Both matches could prove pivotal for their respective objectives – Düsseldorf fighting to avoid the drop, Dresden aiming to consolidate their mid-table position.
As the 2. Bundesliga season enters its final stretch, the contrast between the two clubs couldn’t be more pronounced: one grappling with the immediate impact of a coaching change that hasn’t yet yielded results, the other celebrating a return to stability in the stands after a turbulent period.
